No the sire and dam are not necessary to have DNA ran on dog, it is a stand alone type thing. The test would identify that particular dog, if needed in future in breeding program or identify dog should proof needed to show that was same dog if lost or stolen or same dog entered in hunt should question arise.

Thanks for answering that for me. How do you prove that the dog you have is the same dog that the papers are for?

In that case you would have to compare it to the sire and dams DNA.

The DNA can only prove parentage when the parents are DNA profiled as well.

The DNA will identify that dog in the future, and you will be able to use it to help identify his/her pups.

I make sure all my hounds are DNA, it protects the integrity of your breeding program from any possible accusations down the road.
