I am looking into reaching farther out there with my garmin. I was wondering what's the best? I like to hear to good and bad. I don know if I should get antenna for the collar or for my 220. But I firgure I would ask before I just went and start buying . I hunt in the hills nothing flat around here. So just let me know something. Thanks

I CHANGED THE ANTENNAS ON MY DC 30s AND NOTICED THAT THEY DON'T LOSE COMMUNICATION AS OFTEN. MAYBE A LITTLE MORE RANGE BUT NOTHING OUTSTANDING. I GOT A 15 INCH FLEXABLE AND THE GARMIN LONG RANGE FROM BRUCE CONKEY FOR MY 220. THE 15 INCH OUTPERFORMS THE STOCK ANTENNA BY A GOOD BIT AND WHEN IT LOSES COMMUNICATION THE GARMIN LONG RANGE WILL STILL PICK IT UP. I'VE HAD DIFFERENT RESULTS AS FAR AS RANGE GOES, DEPENDING MOSTLY ON THE TYPE TERRAIN AND THICKNESS OF THE WOODS BEING HUNTED. I ALSO HAVE A GARMIN MAGNET MOUNT FOR THE TRUCK. THE LONG RANGE GENERALLY GETS 'BOUT A 1/2 MILE MORE THAN THE FLEXABLE AND THE MAGNET MOUNT GETS ANOTHER 1/2 MILE OVER THE LONG RANGE. I'M NOT GETTIN' THESE 5-6 MILE RANGES SOME CLAIM, BUT CHANGIN' ANTENNAS HAS GOT ME TO TRUSTIN' THE GARMIN MORE THAN I DID WHEN I FIRST GOT IT. I STILL RUN MY TRUSTY ATS BEEP-BEEP, BUT HAVEN'T HAD TO PULL IT OUT LATELY. HOPE THIS HELPS.

I agree with Riproaringkennels in that I see about the same results that they do and I live here in SE Ohio.

I've been looking and looking. There is so many out there now that I don't know where to start. I was thinking about going buying off Garmin. But I didn't know if the aftermarket ones r better? Around the house you get about 700 yds and then your done. Either get on top of the hill or try to keep up. I also run my beep beep just in case. Keep the replies coming in. I would like to know more !!!! Thanks

Got the ones on my dc 30's from valley creek. Picked up on from S&S for the hand held. It gave me double the range I was getting which was about 750 yards. Also bought a mag mount for the truck. It bumped it up to alittle over 3 miles. The one for the hand held is not a rubber one it slide out just like a walkie talkie antenna does. Slid in its about 4 inches out about 10 to 12.

When you guy's do your test on distance, do you take the handheld and start driving or do you take your collars and start driving while someone watches the astro?

If you are wanting long range in the timber, either the longer antenna from Garmin or similar aftermarket will help. It has been said that the telescoping aftermarket will give you the best, but I am not a telescoping fan, too much chance of breaking. I have tried a couple aftermarket collar antennas. They help some, but don't feel it is enough to replace if there is nothing wrong with the one on it. I have done different tests with truck mounts. I recently purchased a standard coil gain antenna in the 150 range, just like what you would see on your local sheriff's car or fire truck. I purchased the crimp SMA male connectors from ShowMeCables.com. On a nice clear day I took a drive leaving a couple collars home. I lost signal at 7.3 miles with the standard magnet mount that you can purchase from vendors. I lost range on the DC40 with standard antenna at 9.4 miles and was still picking up the DC30 with an aftermarket with the coiled gain. I was starting to drop down a grade and I knew it would fall off shortly, so I turned around and headed home. I have about $60 bucks in the antenna after I put on the crimped connector.

Tim did you put a Screen Protector on your gramin or have you Scratched it Up that Bad ????

I am sure someone will disagree with it, or say it makes no difference but in my experiences and tests with the Garmin and long range antennas for the collars the most accurate readings have been from keeping the handheld stationary and someone drive the collar away…..that is what your dog is going to do. Its also a better way to see which antenna out performs the other,
DC 30 or DC 40 and which updates quicker.

I have had way to many crazy readings on distance while tracking hounds with the Garmin, mainly the 220. I haven’t had the 320 do it yet, but it may tomorrow.


Majestic that antenna you make is one sharp cookie, hope to be making some just like them in the near future, providing I get the time. Thankx for sharing.
