What would you breed her to?

Okay....I never thought I would type that question....and part of this is because I think it's "funny".......but the other part is that I'm about half-and-half on the fence and haven't made up my mind yet.

I have a female here that is in heat, and I've kinda been waiting on her to come in. She is a three quarter sister to my Cube dog...so that rules him out as a stud, and because I do in fact believe a cross with her on Cube would be a little "over the top" (that is saying a lot for me) That leaves me with two choices in my Kennel to breed her to.

This is her pedigree...

The OTHER choice that I have is haunting me right now. I have in my kennel a young dog that I fell in love with his third or fourth night in the woods. He's still VERY young and not what I would consider "finished" by any stretch of the imagination...but he's well on his way....... This dog is a get yonder, go hunting, get one bushed kinda dog that is the kind of tree dog that we all want....and the tree part is where the female needs a little "help". She is a bawl moth tree dog, and I am looking for some real tree power.

Thorn has certainly sired some nice pups, is a tree dog deluxe and would give me what I'm looking for as well...but I'm curious about what the young male will throw....

So....having said that...what would ya'll do?

JMO-Joe but I would go in assuming either litter will give you what you want. Then I would ask yourself, which cross gives me a female that would go back on Cube nicely. ( Or a male on a Cube or Thorn Daughter). Would be all about looking down the road for me. Again...jmo

i would expect some of the pups out of your female would tree just like she does no matter what you cross with her.

Actually, I'm not sure that this is true. I owned both her sire and her dam, am hunting a half brother to her, and have hunted with several of her siblings....she's a bit of an "anomaly" in that department. I am sure that there is a chance, but what I do know is that, at least where Thorn is concerned, he has NEVER thrown a bawl mouth tree dog, and he has been bred to a couple of bawl moth females.....

To me this is a question about continued line breeding (since Thorn is out of a Stylish Clover female), and a complete outcross.

I haven't made an outcross in so long...it spooks me a little. But I am dying to know what this male pup will throw.

Is it really right for Joe Newlin to make an outcross? Stick to what has worked.

Just a thought. If you wanting something with some tree power with a little Clover thrown into it I would breed to something like Cascade Jack Attack.

Yes, Jinx was a littermate brother to Little Man...and man what a litter of pups that was. It was a small litter, but every pup in the litter made Grand Nite, and both Little Man and Jinx went on to be reproducers.....

Nothing against your dogs guys.....but if I really had to go outside of my own kennel to get what I'm looking for....I'd quit.

I have been raising this line of dogs for quite a while now, and I truly like what I have. I'm not "blind" to outside dogs, but there truly is NO way that I would go shopping for a stud dog on the internet......

I'm not looking for the typical "what to breed her to suggestions". Thank you kindly, and I applaud you for believing enough in your stud dogs to suggest them....but quite frankly it ain't gonna happen.

She will be bred to one of the two dogs I mentioned, or she won't be bred at all.

General Lee for me. I'm not a fan of sackett so thorn is out on my vote. I would be fearful of the sackett spreading blanket backs in my clover blood. Sounds like he would compliment your females faults, if you want to call it a fault.

Say it isn't so Joe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!lol

Joe,

How old is the female? Has she reproduced the quality of pups you desire? If so then the young male would be a good candidate. If she herself is young, I would probably stick with Thorn, and choose an older female that you know does her part to test the young male out.

Joe,

I'm not going to venture a guess on this one, as you know, I lack the experience and knowledge. But you've peaked my curiosity... what traits or attributes do you think or hope Lee will bring to the cross that Thorn wouldn't? Or are you considering this breeding as a trial, to answer that question?

David Schmidt

You said it there............Give you what you're looking for, and is a proven reproducer. I'd go with Thorn! You said your other choice was still young and if all goes well you can always breed to him down the road!!! Just my 2 cents!! Best of Luck!!!

Haven't updated the post at all, but I came to a decision late last night.

Basically, I came to the same realization that Larry did late last night. I don't know much about her reproduction abilities, I know what her mother, aunts, and sisters have reproduced, but having never bred her, she is a poor test for my young male.

Thorn is the "lucky dog" and is in the kennel with her as I type this....has been for a little while so I'm pretty sure "the damage is done"....
