rules question

Im 18 and lookin to get into comp hunting i've read the blue book a million times and just wana make sure i got things rite. So my question is tree etiquete. When your on a tree and your dog is split do you help the handler who's dog is on the tree look for his coon or not? I would think he would want all the help he can get but im not sure. Also do you tree dog your dog for what you know he's about to do or when he does it "like when he throws a yodel 2 seconds before a locate and you know he's about to tree but not quite locked down" Thanks a lot

Well, the UKC rule book isn't blue, that's the PKC rule book but that's ok, at least you are reading the rules!

In UKC the dog with first tree controls the tree for the 1st few minutes. That means the handler with 1st tree will tell the cast if he wants help or not. After a few minutes, everyone can shine. Most want a low light used those first few minutes. A good basic rule for beginners is don't do anything other than calling your dog without asking the judge first. Ask the judge before you shine. Ask the judge before you squall. Etc. And try to find every coon like it's your coon whether your dog is treed or not. Tree your dog when you believe he is treed right. If you are confident treeing on the locate, fine. If you feel better waiting till the dog is settled in, do that. DO NOT tree your dog before it falls treed because you are sure he will be there when the cast gets there. That is a very bad habit to get into.
Accept the fact that your first 5 entry fees are for handlers lessons. Even if you win those first 5 hunts, you will still have learned more than your dog did. Good luck.
