To shoot or not to shoot?

The last night of coon season here we took our year old female English Bluetick, who hasn't been to the woods but about 8 times because we got her a little late in the season, and it friend took his 9 month old male Walker. Well our dog and his dog trees a possum together, this was the first time our dog had treed anything besides a hang up coon. I had to stay at the truck because we had our Redtick strike. Anyway my friend shot the possum out on the young dogs. So what would you do? Shoot the possum and let the dogs have it, or let them tree for a bit then pull them off? I know they say it's good for a dog that hasn't been messed with much to know to run something up a tree lol.

It's fine if you are training a possum dog but if it was suppose to be a coondog, I'd have pulled him off that tree with no praise of any kind.

Never shoot undesired game out to your dog!!! You've given it a opposom so now it thinks its ok to tree it. I would have just went in and got them and been done with it, seeing it was their first time. Only reward or praise a pup or dog when it does something right! Best of luck with your pup!

Had I been there I would have pulled our dog off. But I was back at the truck. I have just heard that if a pup hits a possum don't praise them but for them to tree something is a good thing.

Yep, the first tree is cool be it possum, cat or coon. But I never put it out unless it's a coon.

If you don't care and lots of folks around here don't. Shoot the very first thing it ever treed out. Be it a bird,or whatever. Id not shoot mine a possum no way. Coon only. I figure the time will come on its on I have to break em off possums.
