OT...Anyone that knows how to install electric fence

Gotta quick question on electric fence. On the positive side, does it have to connect on both ends or can you just run 1 positive wire straight out and end without looping back. Im thinking it has to make a loop but not sure, Thanks. I have a 5 acre fenced for hounds, but am going to put goats in for a while and wanted to run an electric wire 20" up and another on the top.

your ground should be hooked to a ground rod... the postive can stop wherever you want it to

The positive or hot side does not have to make a loop, just make sure its connected good. Most inportant is the ground side. Check you charger instructions. Some of the better fence chargers like Gallager or Zareba say to have 3 ground rods 10 feet apart to get the max shock. If you have a smaller charger you might keep it wet around the ground rod, This will help. Good luck.

Thank yall for your help. Is it okay if it does make a complete loop....What I was planning on doing is running the hot wire completely around the five acres and connecting the two ends and then hook a jumper from the energizer to the hot wire...Hard to explain what Im thinking...I thought I had read somewhere that it cant just run to an open end. I did buy 3 6ft ground rods. Thanks again.

YOU CAN RUN THE POSITIVE BACK TO ITSELF ANYWHERE ALONG THE LENGTH OF WIRE, JUST DON'T CONNECT IT TO THE NEGATIVE, THE CIRCUIT IS MADE THRU THE GOAT (OR YOU) BEING IN CONTACT WITH THE GROUND ( RODS DRIVEN SOLIDLY IN THE GROUND AND ATTACHED TO THE NEGATIVE SIDE WITH INSULATED WIRE) AND THE POSITIVE SIDE(FENCE WIRE)!!! HOPE THIS HELPS!!!

If you are running your hot wire around in front of a hog wire or net wire fence, it will also help when the ground gets dry to put a jumper from your ground side to the fence. That way it will make contact better if animal gets between hot wire and fence which will be 100% ground.
