show rules?

just wondering what some of the rules are about what can be used on dogs to get them ready for showing? hair trimming ? that sort of thing. also when gaiting is it better to be gaitng the dogs at a quick walk or or more of a jogging gait?

Bench Show?
Why would you trim hair unless you were trying to hide overly long hair which shouldnt be on any hound I know of
I like to quick walk my dogs when I show them you usually dont have a very big area to gait them for the judge I wouldn't want to try to jog with them myself
I hunt the dogs I show so I don't worry too much about shining them up cause they mostly looking at structure and how your dog meets it's standard not how slick and pretty it is but i do like to brush and wipe my dog down with a wet wipe really good the judge is gona look at feet teeth ears nails muscle tone and legs cause those things make the dog !

Basic grooming is not a problem.
UKC rules state that excessive grooming is not allowed or anything to alter the look of the dog. Using chalks etc to enhance colors being an example.

As far as gating. It depends on the gating pattern being used. If you are doing a basic down and back a more natural pace should be used slow to medium speed. A dogs natural track closes together in the back feet the faster they are being moved. If you gate a down and back to fast it will appear that the dog hind legs are to close or may even cross over on the gate. So slower on a down and back is better. If a judge is looking at the dog from the side a faster pace is more fitting because this will show the drive of a dog. Meaning how well they flow from front feet to back feet at a faster pace.

Hope this helps....

Man I am learning a lot

I thought chalk is something you use to write on a chalk board with. Why would you put chalk on a dog?

First of all let me say I have NEVER personally shown a dog so please excuse any ignorant questions I may ask... If the judge is supposed to be judging the dog on the way the dog is built, its angles and the flow of its gate and so forth why would it matter how pretty the dog looks? If it does matter which one is the prettiest Shouldnt an experienced judge be able to see through all the make up?.. Not trying to be sarcastic I honestly don't know anything about showing..

pretty so much doesn't matter aside from the pleasing look of a sound built dog, the corrrect head is also imo "pretty" and there are the obvious reasons color come into play.. leps can't have too much white, redbones need to be red, plotts have to have brindle etc.. but also the optical illusion you can get from color, like where the color breaks on walker dog shoulder or thigh, or where the ticking on the blues or english fall on the top line, a light or dark spot and draw your attention in, create or disguise a flaw.. that's where pretty is a factor on the coat I think.

and Mr. H.L. they make chalk in every color! lol in AKC it's used on the skin where the hair is thin to help disguise the flaw, like hocks and elbows... they look bigger when they are dark!

There you go.
The only reason the owner/handler is there is to make the dog look as good as they possibly can to the judge. This usually includes trimming the nails, triming the shaggy hair at the loins, giving a bath and lots of training / practise. Some carry it farther but those are basic for a bigger show. Local club shows not so much.
You can say you're not going to or shouldn't have to but f you get beat by a cleaner better trained dog when you shouldn't have then who's fault is it that the other person put more into it.

Now Andi

Quote "In AKC it is used on the skin etc, etc, etc. " I thought we were talking about UKC.
Now let's get down to the nuts and bolts of the issue. Chalk and other collors are used at EVERT MAJOR SHOW TODAY they were used in the past and will be used in the future, This is no new issue it was brought up by a person who is no longer showing dogs a long time ago, nothing was done then and nothing will be done now. Just like the issue of druging dogs that was also visited a LONG time ago.
Now while we are at it let's visit another issue UKC licens TWO types of events 1- All Breed Show 2- BENCH SHOW has UKC alowed judges to combined both into one as, If i go to a all breed show, which we have, I have never been asked to put my dog on a bench period. Now let's visit the COON DOG BENCH SHOW which is advertised as such and there I think is where the trouble lies. There I am asked to gate my dog by running, fast walk what ever that is, jog, prance, run do what ever i think the judge wants, which I am never sure of and do one of the above in a area that is NEVER conducive to such activity, then place them on a bench get beat and told THE WINNER GAITED A LITTLE BETTER. BENCH SHOW?. ALL BREAD? HUMMMMM maybee why I sent my judges card in confused.

We are discussing animals, they aren't made on a assembly line, none are ever going to be exactly the same. There are always more factors than which is cleaner or better groomed. However a dog more prepared, trained, well kept etc gives the judge a better view of what they are working with.

Well said Dale
