Real hounds vs. bucket hounds

Congrats to Daniel Wilson and( FRED BEAR) on his cast win on Friday night SETW. Guys this young man is tops in my book and I believe his dogs are good hounds with the TRACK as well as the Tree. he showed a bucket dog how to track and tree a wild coon. when are people and UKC going to understand that this bucket stuff is hurting the hounds , especially in my opion the Walkers. we need to hunt wild coon in the hunts then you wil see who really has the coon dogs. Good luck on Saturday,Daniel and everyone who has a track and tree hound.i hope the bucket dogs have to recast every turn ou,t then boys it will be a different ball game.

Buckets and bucket dogs will never hurt any breed just because of these things you just mentioned. A true bucket dog, and I'm sure there are some out there, will never win anywhere away from home. And a dog that can't win away from it's home buckets ain't gonna make no splash.
I don't doubt there are plenty of dogs in the south that can go any direction and hold their own but a guy that feeds a bucket dog is stuck hunting local or getting his ass handed to him every time he takes a trip.

Put me on buckets if you want to. A coondog is gonna strike and tree coon no matter where you put them and the last time I checked a "bucket dog" still has to strike and tree in front of the others to win. I wish people would come up with better excuses because this one is getting beat into the ground.

Real Hounds vs bucket dogs

you can say it is beat in the ground all you want to, and I don't have to have excuses I was not hunting in the hunt I said I was glad a hound that can hunt a track and go and tree the coon is a better d...m dog than one that trees a hot bucket coon and if you don't care for my comment thats your problem.

a dog that can tree WILD coon can also wear out the buckets. I have seen some bucket coon put up one heck of a run...then what...does the bucket dog stop after a few hundred yrds....don't think so. i start young dogs on bucket and wean them off. I pray that a guide will put me on buckets....regardless you still have to strike and tree your dog. you still have to see the coon. And i don't think hunting a dog on buckets has any effect on the dogs genes. It may cause them to pick up learned behaviors. this seems to be another thread beating down a guy for getting beat. At the end of the night the dog who shows the most coons and is handled right is going to win...BUCKET or not.

The big gripe with buckets has always been that where you hunt wins more than what you hunt. The guide is more important than what is at the end of the leash.
This is prolly the biggest reason for why you so seldom see dogs from bucket country winning World Hunts.

very true...bucket dogs don't win the big ones very often...it never. but its a learned behavior not a bred in trait.

yeah your right...about the home turf...but if you get them off they are in deep water. thats the reason the guys who hunt these type dogs, know the guide and the places hunting and rarely do they hunt if they can't guide. but i have beat them on their own turf.

Sure, any dog can beat any dog on any given night.
Home terf is an advantage anywhere, with or without buckets. But bucket hunting is artificial hunting, it's all setup.

It may be artificial hunting to you guys with thick coon but a bucket coon in thin coon will run farther and be more challenging than a "wild" coon in thick coon.

Really???? Based on what?

They're all wild coon. Part of dog work is finding a coon track to run. Finding a bucket is not what I call dog work.

my op

ive seen a decent dog run and tree bucket coons all training season. and look good doing it. most of the time, there are some decent races. not just a sit down and tree thing. having said that, kill season rolls around and that decent dog whos been hunted regularly buckets and no buckets couldnt tree a possum much rather a coon on government land in big woods. and if that bucket dog did strike a track, he didnt put enough pressure on it to put it up. dude couldve made himself a really good dog if he woulda hunted him right jmo seen it with my own eyes

i think u hit it right on this rip, most of my bucket races are good ones. it takes a decent dog to even tree a bucket coon in some of these steep mtns with laurel thickets and clear cuts, nothing like a corn field in flat country. so i ould take real hound vs a bucket hound anyday. buckets should be used with mostly with young dogs and pups.

not much different hunting buckets than hunting corn field coon in Indiana. I got invited up there yrs ago and we pulled into a field and 8 coon were feeding and shined 4 more sitting in the trees. Lol...i hate a bucket in most cases./....but not much different in the two

I guess it's just a basic difference in mindset. I kill coons, I don't feed'em. When I cut my dog loose, I expect it it do alot of things with absolutely no assistance from me. And the very first thing that dog has to do is find a coon. If I have to set it up for the dog to find a coon, that dog is of no use to me. That's just one of those odd things about this yankee.

Mr Eakins, I hunt with Daniel and Hank (Fred Bear) alot and that dog is maybe half way to where he is headed. He's still in his first full year of hard hunting and I'd say another year from now that dog will be tough to beat anywhere under any condition. Both the dog and the handler have a lot of talent. I really enjoy hunting with both of them.
