Please help, im scared my dog will die!

I adopted my 2 y.o. pitbull from a NY shelter in March 03. Shortly after, he showed signs of lameness and extreme pain. My vet told me to give Glucosmaine and Condrotine (sp?) for 30 days...which did nothing. I took him to another vet for a second opinion and he diagnosed Lymes disease. He put him on doxycycline for 28 days, 2 pills per day. 30 days after treatment ended, we retested and he was again positive. 28 days of 3 pills per day (same meds), waited 30 days, and now he is AGAIN positive. My vet put him on more Doxycycline. What else can i do for my dog??? I am worried since he has had the disease for so long (i don't even know really how long, he could of gotten it before i adopted him!) it will go into his vital organs and eventually kill him. I'm sorry to use this board for the wrong use, but i thought alot of people w/ knowlegde of this disease would read it and can help point me in the right direction. Please any words of advice, or websites i should look at...would be so appreciated... i love my dog and i don't want to lose him. Thank you!
