Anything other than a coon

Running or treeing anything other than a coon is Junk to me. But lots of people call fast game Junk, and give em a pass on posssum. You can eat possum you know. HAHA.

depends if you want a pleasure hunting dog or a night hunting dog...pleasure hunting i consider any tree game (coon, oppousum, squirell, related animals) to be fine as long as they do that at least their treeing but night hunts coon only anything else off game even says so in the rules lol (Rule 6.DOGS WILL BE SCRATCHED: (k) In Nite Champion and Grand Nite Champion cast, for running, treeing, or molesting off game during hunting time including any time out periods prior to the expiration of hunt time.)

Thank's for the input HOBO,glad there is 3 of us think alike. And if i was a pleasure hunter i still wouldn't walk half way up a mountain to see a possum,or a squirrel. That would just be plain stupid to do that.If i wanted to see a grinner i would just ride around in the truck.

25 yrs ago my cousin's dog treed a possum on a sapling and my female backed it but just throwed locate barks so i knew something wasnt right, sure enough she told on him but got herself a come to god meeting in the process..
knock on wood i cant remember treeing any since, but i dont keep anything thats not coondog bred so i dont have any trouble with trash ..since i just braged on them may see 10 possums next time out,,lol

When I was 13 I wanted a coondog so I set some boxtraps looked like rabbit boxes > I quickly caught 14 possums and got a sale for 35 cents a piece. My mom and dad would let me drive the old plymouth coon hunting so I delivered the possums down a dirt lane. It slid off the road in a ditch and I walked home and got the 8 N to pull it out backwards and tore off the muffler. I ,like you, have figured anything that ain't a coon since then is junk.

Ive owned dogs that have been naturaly strait since day one and ones that were trashy as Hell when young.....the ones that ran junk were harder hunters with alot more game drive .....the straight ones always accurate but lacked the little bit of extra drive that I like......much rather have a pup run the Hell out of somethin than nothin!!

I haven't either.
But , I have only seen one that would "cold-trail" one up and tree it! LOL
She died young , but was never broke off of them.
I saw her leave a hot coon race , to go kill a possum , and then came back and still beat the other dogs to the tree! LOL

If you comp. hunt then a possum is junk and a long ride home.

But I don't comp. hunt and enjoy going to as many trees as possible. So if my dogs tree 3 coon and 1 possum or 1 coon and 3 possum, either way it's still a fun night. If my dogs tree a bear, bobcat, coon, or possum I don't care. If they run a hog I don't care. I ain't wrong and neither are you, but it's nice to know what it will run and won't up front.

The term "junk" is subjective but generally means a dog is running or treeing animals that are NOT the intended game animal you're after. What is considered junk to one may be an animal someone else pursues.

Examples.........

Coonhound running a deer, fox, dillows or treeing possums or porky's.

A bearhound running a coyote, deer, moose, treeing a coon or porky.

Hogdog running deer, dillows etc

Coyotehound running deer, moose etc

To me "junk" is anything that will not tree. Coon, Possum, GreyFox, squirrel etc. are not junk.

i sure wouldnt want a coon dog that trees fox possums and squirrels it would either be broke off these or be stone cold dead not being smart but you got alot to learn if you think those that you listed is not junk a real coon dog is supposed to tree coons not all things that climb jmo

Was gonna mention that but figured it was a given. Had a bitch one time that wouldn't tree a coon until she killed a skunk first. She would pass a coon track up to find a skunk, then come back a tree the coon. She didn't get fed very long.

I'll give you another I don't want and thats staying at and even worst digging in a hole in the ground. Even if it's coon. Go find me one in a tree the holes a waste of time and a good way to lose a dog.
