Pup Training

What do y'all do to work with your pups before you actually start hunting them. Im talking about a young pup that's 5 months old or younger. Im walking my pup through the woods during the daytime to get him confident in going by himself and to get him used to the woods. I was just curious what everybody else does.

The best thing ive found that works for me is to find a good place to let them run loose. Let them run loose from the time their 5 months old till their 7 months old. It makes them a little shy but they come right out of it. Once you keep them up for about a week take them out with a good old dog and watch them go. As soon as they start treeing and runing track a little they never hunt with another dog. All woods time by their self about 2 or 3 nights a week. Works for me.

That's kinda what iv been doing so far. I can't let my pup run loose cause he would probably get run over but iv been taking him by himself almost every day and letting him run around and working on basic commands.

Here they run loose with a couple of squirrel dogs & an old hound . Most get to running and treeing in no time . Learn to run a track & that critters go up , navigate the woods , cross fences ect . We work with them on occassional cage coon & turned loose coon . They learn to lead & lead in the timber , to come when called & to mind . Nothing shy about any of them but they are worked with & petted on everyday .
If you can't let them run loose your walking & turning the pup loose in the woods often is important , even walks along little creeks if you can . Just so long as the pup gets out of the pen some and gets to explore & get around in the trerain . And getting the ground work for a little handle on the pup now will make your time when it's ready to start a much more pleasurable experience .

If their bred right they pretty much start their selves. You just need to get your self a new pair of boots cause you will wear out your old ones. Good luck with them pups. Maybe catch a live one and show to them but i wouldnt do it to much.

im just learning to but my dogs are running now i would say dont expect to much to soon they all start diffrent i like to bond with the pup makes them want to please you, then show him a live coon( dont let it hurt your pup)then a few drags that end at a coon (DONT OVER DO IT) after that take him with a older dog that is trash free and once he trees with the old dog get ready to put some miles on your boots take him alone and wait im sure i left some out

Yea I don't believe in pushing a pup. Iv been walking my pup through the woods for about a week now and I think it will make a difference in the long run.
