dual purpose dogs
I am new to this I've always ran rabbit dogs and a few blueticks but I'm not to familar with any curs or feists. I am wantin to get a dog that I canr run coons and squrriels with what is yours guys opinons on breeds of dogs that would best fit this purpose. Any info at all would be greatly apprciated it. Thanks

I agree with Mr. Inman and Mr. Morrison. Mountain Cur would be hard to beat. They are the most consistant combo dogs (on coon and squirrels) out there. IMO

I like a good mountian cur there sure are some good ones out there... If you are a former hound man you might like a treeing cur a little better.... That being said I will hunt anything that hunts, trees and handles well...

im a treeing cur fancier myself. but i have been in the woods with some good mt curs as well. hound cur cross works well also. my dogs are only 1/4 hound but the original cross was 1/2 and 1/2. go hunting with some guys who have curs and see what you like. im looking for a good mt cur to cross to right now before i cross back into my original stuff. good luck

i bought a 3 yr old mt. cur in the summer. i was told he was strictly squirrel and had never been on coon. i started hunting him 3-4 nights a week on coon. after a month of this he was doing a nice job on coon. now he doesnt care about treeing sq. at all. he will tree 1 here or there but he trees more coon in the daytime than he does sq. is this a common thing? i dont care at all but just wondered why.
It's been my experience that most (not all) dogs that are hunted day and night will DEFINITELY show a preferance to one or the other and more times than not it's coon. I hunt sq with mostly feist and coon with treeing curs, that said SOME feist are OUTSTANDING coondogs. There are a couple here that can handle ANY breed of dog you throw em' down with. You hunt small dogs at night the likelyhood of getting one killed on occasion is real and it happens. We have some that do both fine but I prefer to hunt a dog hard on one target species as I believe they are far more likely to reach their FULL potential that way.

ive heard so many different opinions on the subject. what you stated mr.wright makes the most sense to me. its funny because when i shoot out a sq he doesnt even really care. he may mouth it a little but sometimes he doesnt even touch them. he also doesnt tree them near as hard and doesnt even stay put sometimes. which is really not like him.
