Dog Quits Barking On Tree When You Get To The Tree.

Hello,
I have a friend of mine who's dog runs real hard and trees hard too, but when you show up at the tree he will come off the tree to you and quit barking. He will go back to the tree and stand on it and look up, but wont bark. Occasionally he will bark a few times, but not very often.

Any thoughts on correcting it?

Scott

LOTS AND LOTS OF PRAISE! GET HIM REALLY EXCITED, PET HIM WHEN HE TREES. BUT IF HE'S NOT TREEING DONT DO ANYTHING OTHER THAN PET HIM.

ALSO, HAVE ANOTHER DOG WITH HIM THAT WILL TREE REGARDLESS AND PET THE FOOL OUT OF IT FOR TREEING. LET HIM WATCH AND HE WILL SEE THAT YOU WANT HIM TO TREE AND THAT HE GETS PRAISE WHEN HE DOES.

Id say this is the best bet but i wouldn't give the dog any more praise than usual most dogs today want to tree too much as it is that only makes dogs tree more which usually ends up in slick trees cause they gettin praised to tree not have a coon

sounds like if he's got the coon just let it be and he's waitin on the coon to fall out. he's had alot shot out to him and he's waitin on the fur. don't get him excited about treein that'll have him pullin up slick about 50 or 60 percent of the time.

Sounds like he needs to cull the dog. I will take it and not charge him a thing. LOL I would love to have one that shuts up once I reach the tree. The dog ran the track, treed the coon, and now it can rest why I look for the coon.

a green switch can stop that coming off the tree without beating him only praise when he has the coon he doesn't know he is doing wrong untill corrected it doesn't take long but correction is what is needed to tighten up on the tree imo

Ahhh......that's the way I like it. End up in the middle of surburbia at 2 a.m. with one that draws attention from the whole community while you're shining the tree you could have a problem. Get me there and we'll leave together without any issues.......Maybe?

Don't fix what ain't broken. I would bet he is a smart dog. He just stands there waiting for the coon to fly out of the tree to him!

Well, I don't know if my friend is aiming to competition hunt him or not , but the reason I would want him to stay on the tree is for that reason.
I have never competition hunted in my life and so I don't know what the rules are, but wouldn't the dog be minused as Patch9452 stated for coming off the tree to meet you? How would that work if he went back to the tree, but never barked on it?
As far as pleasure hunting goes, the dog will provide plenty of fur. But it's the competition hunting side that is troublesome. Anyway, "Thanks" for all the replies.

Scott

The dog can meet the handler off the tree a little ways. But it has to go back and show tree. How far off the tree does the dog go to meet his owner? Does he go right back to the tree? These are just a few of the things you would need to take into consideration on a comp hunt. I have hunted with several dogs in hunts that would meet the handler a little way off the tree and go right back. One just went back and whined, but it showed tree.

even though the rules say a dog can meet you off tree as long as it goes back and shows tree is the most abused rule in the book they will minus you and there is nothing you can do majority rules and you will lose if they can't beat with dog power they will beat you anyway they can and thats one of easiest ways to do it imo.

Yea, I agree with the rule being abused. Allen touched on it a while back and kinda gave an approximate distance. Only thing is I will set the standard by the first tree the dog makes. Most have not came off far enough for me to minus them. I don't stop walking either. Alot of times if you stop walking the dog will stop and look at you and then you are forced to basically minus them. There are alot of really nice coondogs that will meet their handlers off the tree just to say " Hey, over here, I got him. " A good judge uses common sense and should not have a problem if the dog doesn't come off to far and hang around you.

most judges don't have common sense they want to win plain and simple and get rest to vote there way 2 to 1 or 3 to 1 never seems to go 2 to 2 so moh or panel can decide if your first tree and your dog meets you be ready for that minus now if you hold back and take 2,3,4,tree on that first tree your okay they won't bother you thats happened many times over the years thats why hunts should have non hunting judges that have no interest in the out come !!!!
