I have recently moved back to MI. I have been acquiring some property to hunt. Nothing big but quite a few small one drop type properties. But most of the owners say I hae to wait till after muzzleloader deer season. One guy said just till after shotgun season. Does anybody else have problems getting permission to hunt during deer season? If my dog doesn't trash does it really effect the deer hunting?

This is a topic that gets a lot of discussion on here. People that say coon hunting will run their deer off basically don't have a clue. I understand why they think it would but I could fill page one of your post with stories of deer that came in to see what was going on and didn't run off, deer that were bedded down within 50 yards of the tree and never left while I shot the coon out, walking through a herd of deer feeding on acorns to get my dog, bucks that picked their heads up to look at me and went back to feeding, etc. Occasionally deer run off but they don't go far and will be right back minutes after you leave. They act like a completely different animal in the dark.

I hunt a large cattle ranch not far from my house. The first year the ranch manager didn't want me to hunt after Oct. 1st but changed his mind after he started hunting with me and saw how the deer didn't react to dogs that weren't chasing them.

Exactly wish I could get people to understand that. I actually had a deer on the side of the road going into one of the places I hunt. I turned the dog loose just to make sure she wouldn't trash. Ran right past it not even paying attention. Seen deer all night that night. No interest at all. Just wish landowners could see stuff like that then maybe I could hunt my places right now. Instead of laying her up for gun season on property and till after muzzleloader on the rest. Oh well at least they let me hunt and I am the only coonhunter on any of those properties.

I can think of nothing more futile than trying to convince a deer hunter that coon hunting doesn't ruin the deer hunting.

made a drop the other nite where there are lots of deer heck i had to clap my hands to get them to move, my pup even run right by them they just stand there ,

Mine have been guilty of moving a deer now and again, not hard core or long lasting, and I got a couple that smell funny to along with most of my hunting stuff . All said and done if it belongs to them we have to respect their wishes . Some places have stands built that they lease out to deer hunters for nice dollars and despite what may or may not happen would lose business if customers knew dogs ran coon there at night.
Ones that irritate me are those that think public land belongs to them during deer season. Personally I already lay back a bit during gun season cause I don't like to risk losing a dog and not getting it back before daylight for the obvious reasons but even that is mostly a throwback to the old days before we had tracking systems to find our dogs. Seldom come home without the dogs these days.

good luck trying to convince them that it doesn't hurt there hunting. I have tried to do that myself and it is basically a waste of time. I have even offered to take them on a hunt to show them that in no way does it affect their next days hunt............ but still can't get them to do that. If you figure out the secret by all means let us know............................................

i have a few people that request that i not hunt there property during deerseason but one guy wants me to hunt one of his deer spots because they eat all his bait
