Cur, Fiest or Hybrid???

I grew up squirrel hunting with my grandfather and his fiests. Got out of high school and started coon hunting walkers and black & tans. Did this for about 25 years. Just put my old walker bitch down, 15 yo, Nt Ch, 3 wins to Grand, Show Champion. I Hadn't hunted her for 5 years although my sons did.
I've got to get back in the woods. I love to squirrel hunt and night hunt, but not real late. Gonna get a dog for both. Would like some opinions, Fiest or Cur or Hybrid??? I love a good tree dog, but I do not like a silent track dog. I wanna hear some chase too.
I like a smaller dog 18-22 lbs. Down ears sorta like Old Yeller. Big, loud mouth. Female only. Gonna be kept in the house and ride in the truck. Got to be my sidekick. Offer up your opinions please. I'm hurting inside 'cause I lost my housedog 1 year ago and I'm dogless.
What do you all think would work best for me?

Thanks and God Bless!

Chief

most Fiest dogs do'nt have a big loud mouth, and a true Cur type dog will weigh more than 18 or 20 pounds so you might have to compramise something. you might find a hybrid or some kind of a fiest/cur cross that might come close to what your looking for. or you might find what you are looking for in a real heavy Streak bred mountain cur, but in my opinion some of these dogs do'nt fit the breed standard for size, but that might be ok for you if you do'nt care. there are the Kemmer hybrids but i have never hunted with one and do'nt know much about them. i believe they are Kemmer curs mixed with a fiest type dog. i hear the parnell's carolina curs are good. i believe they are a stephens cur mixed with some feist type dog, that might be more like what you are wanting, but it would be better if you looked into these hybrids for yourself, then you could get a better understanding of what they are. these hybrids are usually registered as a treeing feist or sometimes a treeing cur with the UKC if you wanted to register them with the UKC.

Just my experience, hope it don't happen to anyone else. Hunting a small dog at nite and came across a couple of coyotes. You can guess what happened. Nothing that small for me at night.

If you want small dog that is open on track then I would look for a smaller stephens female - dont know if you will find one in the 18 to 22 pound range but you should find one under 30 pounds no problem.... they generally are not bawl mouthed like a hound but they are open on track and I would say have the best mouths on average of all the cur breeds

I hunt a 16 inch 23 pound feist night and day - she has held her own against coyotes on at least a dozen occasions... a bigger dog might be better against yotes but some of the smaller dogs do just fine...

Coyotes

I have lost 2 beagles to coyotes in the past and put blinky lights on at night on coon hounds seems to work well to keep coyotes off them. Might try it on little coon dogs.

There are good dogs of all breeds and mixed breeds that make good sq and coon dogs.

Do your homework and see what is out there.

My buddy Calvin Boutte started the Cajun Squirrel dogs now know as Tn Mtn Hybrids.

He also has some full Kemmers in the 25 to 35 lb range that he uses in the Hybrid program.

Here is a link to his website you may want to review!

Hope you find the right dog for you!

What treedog man said!! Another thing if having the dog in the house is what is limiting you to the size I wouldn't let that limit you to what you want. I have a mountain cur that is over 40 pounds (never weighed her) and she is the best house dog I ever had. Calmest, gentlest, best listening dog you would want. Real good squirrel dog. Now with that being said. I have a pup out of her that took after someone on the fathers side and she is small and she is a ball of fire. Pup is gonna be a great dog with lots of get up and go. Guess what I am saying is size don't mean a whole lot in the house. It is the dog that matters. Was just reading a post on another site bout a little feist that is a good hunter but is 4 years old and still tears up the house. Never coon hunted but I believe a lot of mountain curs will open up on a coon trail and not a squirrel trail. May be wrong on that but don't think I am.

I have some of the nicest pups I've ever had right now. I raised a litter of pups from that liver colored female in the last picture. They turned out absolutely great. They are about 5 months old and giving the cat heck.
