Got mine from Walmart.com cheapest place I could find em make sure the batteries stay good got in woods one night and battery indicator flashed and screw me up a little but from now on I keep a spare set of AAA in my pocket. Another thing when you pick it up to go out hold it still for a few seconds so it can read and get everything together. A must have in my book I like my garmin but that's to expensive to carry in woods hope this helps you good luck and knock em out

Backtracker

In this big wooded country where I live it is a must have item. Last friday night dogs got into an area with no roads, walked a far ways into the tree, backtracker said I was 1.6 mi from my truck. Led me back to the truck door without a hitch.

Also noticed there are several different types. Is the three
points better than the 5. Camo any better than the one
that is black cased and long gainted rather than circle type?

well said, it really is. very handy. i carry brunton pin on compass and the backtrack. they both always point me in the right direction. no need for a garmin, i'm pretty good with my old school tracking equipment.

I like mine. It has got me out of the thick national forest many times! Only complaint i have is sometimes it takes a long time to pick up signal but it always has picked it up just takes a while. Definitely a good buy!

Love mine

I use mine in the hunts. Perfectly legal. It has no way of tracking dogs, just waypoints that you set.
I also carry it as a back up to the garmin when pleasure hunting. If something happens to the garmin I will still be able to get back to the truck. You can hold the garmin and the backtrack side-byside and they give you the same direction and distance.
Another nice thing is you don't have to leave it on. Set a point, turn it off, and then you can just turn it back on when you need it. Saves battery life, the only down side to this is waiting a minute or two for it to find itself.

I notice when the batteries start to get low,it takes it longer to pick up satellites. I've had one for 3 years and still use it ,even though i got a Garmin.

Mine just has the three. Really don't have a need for any more than that.

If you have a Garmin..it will work just like the backtrac...go to mark location then go back into menu and hit compass ,,this will give you a arrow pointing to your marked spot and tell you how many yards away from it you are. I customized my list on my menu and put the compass setting there ,,makes it easy to get to .

I'm glad to hear that! My dad an i just bought one, we are planning on hunting away from our farm, and we are going to be getting into some mountains etc. we didn't really know a thing about them.

People like me that get lost very easy, appreciate the backtrack much more than people with a good sense of direction. Some of my friends seem like they have a backtrack in their own minds. lol

i can find my way back without it, but it gives you an element of confidence when the backtrack and your compass are both telling you the same way that you had in your head, and you can move right out without stopping and wondering"am i headed the right way?".
