Babyin a pup??

I got my hound at 6 weeks old and now shes 1yr. shes really agressive towards caged coons and will run them down but in the woods she seems to just want to staynext to me til she sees a coon... did i baby her to much? How can i break her from this?

She's waiting for you to produce the coon. She knows you've provided the coon in the past and she thinks if she sticks by you she'll get to see another one. Just something to think about. Good luck with your dog.

Thats what happened to us, my female would stay around my dad waiting on him to get the coon for her, but all you have to do is pay her no attention at all when she comes to you and stands by your side, and give her time they will grow out of it, an if you have an older dog to hunt her with at night, that would be a good way for her to learn that you are not always where the coon is!! Good luck!

Some dogs will naturally hunt on their own when you start taking them.Some will be hesitant and you wil spend many nights until they start going off hunting.I don't believe you can tell how a pup will be later in life just because of the way they start hunting when you first take them.I personally know of more than one finished hound that would not leave your side when first started that turned into hard going get gone kick dirt in your face hunting dogs.

Thanks guys! Shes seen like 3 caged coons, i stopped that and yes i knew that was part of the reason and i new it would hurt her thats why i stopped it,.. thanks again

It's not caged coon that hurts a dog it is how you use the caged coon. Most pups stay with you. The easiest way to get them to go is to put them in a pen with a good pup trainer and let them buddy up. Then take them hunting together. He will start going a little further and stay out longer till he is running. I would shoot one out and give him a mouth full of fur ONCE.
If he is a good hard pup I would let it get bit.
If you don't have a pup trainer you can trap and release as much as you want. Just don't let him see the trap or coon. Let the coon out then go back and get the dog. Age the trail as long as you think it should be for him to try to find it. Watch witch way the coon goes so you have an idea of direction. Try to get it to go into the wind or cross the wind.
Follow the pup and keep up. If it makes a loss try to figure out witch way it went and walk that direction or make a big circle and see if the pup finds the next leg to the track.
A lot of times common since will tell you what direction it went. That is all a pup trainer does is straighten out the track for them.
Might think about hunting on a feeder for a while too.
The main thing about useing aids like feeders and traps is not doing any more than you have to. For instance dont ever walk any closer to were you released a coon or you have a feeder out than you have to or any known track for that matter.
The hardest thing to training any scent dog for any scent is to get it to hunt for long periods of time with out smelling ANY scent of what it is looking for.

You can allso do drags to a tree with a caged coon in it or when the temp. is comeing down and there is a light breeze you can take the down wind and walk them across the wind till they hit and go to it. You just have to remember don't do to much of one thing. Don't use the same area or tree and NEVER do any more than you have to to get it to find a track or the coon. Do what ever it takes BUT no more or less. Good luck.

I do the same as Okie Dawg pretty much. I use feeders and caged coon, but I dont walk em straight to the bucket and dont let the dog see the coon in a cage that your turning loose. I turn out the coon and then go get the dog out prob 5 min later.

I assume you don't have the advantage of a trained dog. She is a pup. 18 months I would be worried but not at 1 year. My pups can not go hunting with me untill they can and will load their own self up in the box. I started carrying a five month old a month ago and it hung out with me till last night. It is six months old now. It did not open but it stayed with the dogs the whole hunt. It takes time. Hunting it alone in places that it is likely to smell coon and less likely to get on trash is the biggest worry when training a pup by itself. Babying her is fine at the house but not in the woods. Don't pay her any attention. Not even a word of encouragement to hunt if she doesn't know what or how to hunt.

i dont own an older hunting one but i have a preacher that hunts his with mine some.. he has 2 hunting redbones. and i have a man starting to hunt with them tht does ukc comps...ive never seen his dogs but im sure they hunt since they do the comps

LOL......Don't assume anything just becouse they hall one to the comps. The closer bond thay have with you the longer it will take for them to leave you. That is why mine is raised in the house till old enough to start hunting. Then they are out side forming a bond with the other hounds.
They learn to handle while they are young and in the house. They know come , good boy, bad dog, and speak on command before they go out side. They are allso houser broke. The house breaking just has to be if they are going to live in the house. pluss it teaches them they can't get away with doing things behind your back. Good boy and bad dog teaches them when your happy and mad. Speaking on command teaches them how to get your attention when they need it AND comes in handy when first learning to tree. Come pulls them to a tree when you need them, out of the woods when you need them, off a slick tree with out discuraging them from treeing. A good handle just makes training SOOOOO much easier. The ones that start young may not be as good as the rest when they get older.
Just have patients. I have a 10 month old I have been letting walk with me and he runs into the dark when I cut one of the others but comes back when he notices it is dark out there.
I treed one last night and gave him a mouth full of hair. He bit it a little and licked it some. I threw it up a tree and he started treeing on it. First time ever and he has been to several trees.
Don't beleive the crap about not letting them have the coon till they tree one. tease him with it and throw it in a tree while he is interested. Get him as excited as he is going to get them lead him off wanting more.
Any time a pup will stay at the tree and show interest at the fight I leave them off lead. As long as I can keep them from getting the coon bawled up on there head. If there old enough and hard enough I think it will just make them mad I will let that happen.

i greet my dogs when they come in i dont take a limb to them but iam no trainer either..just want the dog to fill its ok not spend half night trying to catch them jmo

Pups are a mystery, and experience is a valuable teacher...
Everyone reads about a 5 or 6 month old wonder pup, it don't happen very often. That don't mean that a later starter don't make a coondog.
1 of the best dogs I have ever had would just lay down and make a bed and you would of thought she would never start.
I just kept taking her and workin with her, and 1 night I dumped her on a road cross, and she ran it, and treed it while 3 other dogs took off down the road, I knocked that coon out to her and the light bulb went off!
She made the best black and tan that I ever owned.
I was young and that taught me patience pays off with young dogs.
I also had a grade redtick that treed his own coon at 5 months old and did it rite!He made an outstanding coondog, but at 15 months old, he decided that the tree was his, and his alone, he got mean!But his daddy was mean, and he was a carbon copy of his dad!I kept him till he died, I only hunted him by hisself, and he would tree coon like he invented them,I could of sold him many times, but my wife always claimed him, he was part of the family.
Every pup is diffrent, you can lay the foundation for them, leading,loading,teach them the word "no" and introduce them to a racoon.Fool with them as much as you can, and they will absorb alot if they are smart, and the rest is up to what is inside of them.

Late Starter was best I ever had

Because of born date and I didn't hunt through summer I only hunted hide season. The dog didn't get hunted much until he was almost Two. But he learned really quick. So I guess if a guy don't get luckey an get a naturnal, they will go if they have it, and get the chance.

Thanks I am sure of your Coma hounds are great, but have my hands full with Mr. Clean pups now. I get these going for my Grandkids and that may be all I want. Hope all your breeding turns out great for you!
