Define a Circle

What is consider a circle in order to score a rabbit? Seems like today a dog strikes & rabbit comes out of the briars & ppl are trying to call lines. Just would like to know or point me to the rule. Thanks

I was told by a very experienced trialer, that it could be straight out and back or an actual circle.

Why not chage the rule? Do a line every 3 minutes instead of a circle. Less confusion my opinion.

When the dogs jump a rabbit go to the area of the jump and spread out some and watch quietly for the rabbit. After the rabbit returns to where you could shoot it(with a shotgun, not a 30-06) define the line and score it. The dogs must take it away from you and back to where you could have shot it. One line each time. There are times when the dogs jump a rabbit far away. Once they run a good distance and are packed in and you will make it over to the basic area where they jumped. If you are not all the way there and someone sees the rabbit it will probably get scored. When you do not know quite where it was jumped but could hear the dogs running for a while and could tell they had changed direction it makes sense to score it. The dogs will need to take it away and back to the cast again to score another line. It is unfortunate that those who abuse the system earn more points. Try not to let them. Good luck!

The idea of scoring a line according to time has been proposed. The problem with that is giving an advantage to young cast members that can run with the dogs and score more lines.

Hey Matt I guess we all need better hounds to make perfect circles LOL. If you think like a rabbit and you know a hound is running to catch you, If I was a rabbit I would run any direction i could to get them hounds off my tail. I have seen some nice circles though. I think Touchstonebeagles is right about if you want to see a nice circle you need to stay where a hound jumped the rabbit, the rabbit will come back to that stop 95% of the time. Hi ApirlD Thanks, Jim

I have been running beagles for over 50 years and I agree. I have been running a few PKC beagle hunts and they score when the rabbit is seen and a line can be made. Then, 1 minute has to pass before another line can be scored. I like those rules, they are more consistant than having to run a circle. Rabbits rarely run complete circles. I like the shooting position score, that is how I score them at home with my 12 gauge.

Another silly rule is the 3 circle rule. I am a fat, old man that runs a driving rabbit dog. I ain't going to try to kill myself trying to catch a dog that is driving a rabbit. A lot of beaglers are fat, old men that can't coon hunt any more and couldn't catch a driving rabbit dog if their life depended on it. I do have my beagles broke to come to me when I call if they are not running a rabbit.

Yes, I like strike points, but catching dogs off of a hard running track is silly.

Circle

Everyone is correct, rabbits don't run a perfect circle. But alot of the time they will come back or close to where it was jumped. So if you stay close you should be able to score.

I like the 3 circle rule because it supports searching and jumping (hunting). Yeah it would be nice to keep scoring a good running rabbit but it is hunting beagle.

Scoring three circles combined with a bigger point seperation between strike positions was used to require a jump dog and track dog. Because most rabbits do not circle three times, and in some cases the jumps are plussed with no lines scored, I agree with Dave on not catching dogs off a good running rabbit. I also agree with those who would like to see the strike point position points changed.
