young dog problem

i have a young female and she doesnt seem like she gets it...your probably gonna tell me i need to just get rid of her but im gonna try to find a way to make this dog hunt bec she is too nice of a looking dog to give up on...well i can cut her loose with my older dog and she will track with her till the older dog looses her and the pup will run around like she is tracking and the older one will tree and we will get to the tree then a few mins the pup will show up...and at first i was thinking that maybe she was running the same track just a few mins behind but she dont she listens for the older dog then follows the sound...we took them both out the other day and the older dog treed and we were walking into her and a coon ran right out in front of us and crossed the rd and back into the woods and next thing we know the pup ran out of the woods right where the coon went back in and ran across the rd the other way...like she never smelled her at all... i dont know what to do...and when she does get to the tree she wont tree she just smells the ground all around shes not even interested in the tree...and when we shoot it out she cant find it we have to show her where it is...any help at all or is she just plain dumb

GYP

If she don't get it within the next few months, chaces are she never will. Then it will come time for you to decide what to do with her.I just recently culled 2 dogs and they were outta good breeding.I hate like hell to do it,but if I can't find a home for 'em---oh well, you know the rest.

She will have a lot better chance once it warms up and the coons run better and even better chance once the kitten coons start comming down and running around. Older dogs have to work for it to tree coons in the winter months up here. There is probably just not enough scent for her right now.

Have you hung dead coons up over her head to try to make her tree?

Have you put a dead coon up in a little tree where she could see it but not reach it and shook it and squalled trying to make her bark?

well i dunno what you can do do stop babbling besides hope it goes away as she matures which a lot of puppies do but i dunno if there is really anything you can do about that. we turn the puppies loose first so they don't get behind the older dogs cause that causes them to bark when they can't keep up and then they get in the habit of babbling.

play with her with the coon then tie her up and drag the coon away from her so she wants to get it but she can't and wiggle it and try to make her bark.

then when she will bark when you do that, let her see you put it up in a tree just high enough that she can't get it and let her go and when she gets to the tree if she doesn't bark up at it, wigle it and make squally noises and try to make her bark up at it.

then when she will do that, tie her up and drag the coon away from her but this time, don't let her see you put it in tree and turn her loose ad see if she can find it

if she can't find it help her out but try to help her less and less each time

once you can run a drag and put it in a tree where she can't see it and she will find it and tree it and she does this several times, take her back to the woods

if you can, get a caged coon and turn loose for her but don't let her see it go just walk her accross where you turned it loose and let her go

IT DOES TAKE SOME DOGS LONGER THAN OTHERS. GET A ROLLING CAGE AND A LIVE COON AND WINCH IT UP A BIG TREE IN FRONT OF HER. IF SHE WON'T BARK GET THE OLD DOG OUT TO SHOW HER WHAT TO DO. ONCE SHE STARTS BARKING REMOVE THE OLD DOG. THEN TURN THAT COON LOOSE FOR HER RIGHT IN FRONT OF HER AND LET IT RUN OUT OF SIGHT BEFORE YOU TURN HER LOOSE. SHE MIGHT GO OFF OF SIGHT FOR THE FIRST PART, BUT WHEN SHE LOOSES SIGHT OF IT SHE WILL USE HER NOSE TO TRY TO FIND IT. IF SHE TREES IT, GIVE IT TO HER. IF ALL SHE IS DOING WHEN U HUNT HER WITH THE OLD DOG, SHEN YOU SHOOT OUT THE COON KEEP HER TIED UP AND MAKE HER WATCH THE OLD DOG GET THE COON AND DON'T LET HER HAVE ANY OF IT.JUST SOME THINGS THAT WORK FOR ME.

REPLY TO YOUR QUESTION

First of all ,have patience
2ndly:at 1 year old you are not training her correctly.ley me help you,you should started her when she was a pup about 3-6 months old is where I start them myself,to many pees in the pot you have develped a bad problem, heres what you do:
keep her by her self, show her very much affection and introduce her to the scent of a coon, you can go to any outdoors stores like gander mountain, bass pro shop etc and get coon piss, next get you a coon tail and let it soak in that scent for about 3 days then let it air dry, about day 5 ,I want you to tie a rope or strong string to it and find you a long green limb that will bend and tie the end to the tip real good, after that ,I want to start to introduce the scent to her ,if you have to hold it under her nose and get her to play with it,do this for about a week straight, when you are not doing this run here with no ther dogs.if she keep turning her head away from the scent ,then she has an alegery problem.but if you can get her to keep her nose on it move on to the next step
thirdly:get a live coon, place coon in roll cage and roll the coon towards her in other words let her get ticked off at it.
once she crosses that stage pull the cage up using a strong rope and a strong tree branch and pull the coon up just out of reach and see what she does, if she dont show sign of game or treeing then It may be genetic.
forthly:if she does try to get the coon the problem lyes some wheres else, most time ive seen this in 1-2 year olds that have been started wrong and disaplined to bad and the dog becomes very confused, when that happens ,I strongly advise makeing a house pet out of them, because at 2 years of age they are pretty much set in their own ways.if you didnt live so far away I would reccomend you bringing her over and working with her with you.

Misc questions that need to be answered before I would try the above methods:These may show you where your problem may be,if these test are all negative, then you know your problem can be corrected with time and patience with the above methods I descibed to you in the start of this message,I have been Training dogs now for 30 years and am a certified vet tech,I strongly advise you to have her tested at your local vet clinic and with a vet you are comfortable with.
1.have a certified vet look her over, eyes, nose and mouth
2.blood culture,(alagens)
3.xrays(spine,legs,internal exams)
4.EARS
5:Genetic problems in the past(culls)
6.now for the babling, dont be cruel!!!!
add a bark coller and run her alone she will eventually get the point eventaully, you dont wont to stop her from having a good mouth if you know what i mean.....good luck with her,all else feels please contact me ...I am willing to help you......dave

that ears thing is big. if a dog can't smell, a lot of times it's cause of problems in their ears. I knew a guy that had a really nice gnitech redick male that lost his smeller cause he got an ear infection an they never did anything about it. I think he got his nose back when they got it cleared up but i'm not sure that he was ever the same.

As I got older I found that I kinda looked at women the same way I looked at hounds. The best looking one in the world doesn't do me much good if it isn't good at what I need it to be good at. The fact is there is a good chance you can find one that is good looking and can perform. The more time you spend with one that isn't cutting the mustard, the less time you have to find one that does.

Good luck with your dog.
