how do i get my 3 1/2 month old pup excited about a coon. ive been playin with a scented hide to him about 3 times a week. he loves it. been makin fairly long drags with it and has has no problem finding it. but when he finds it he isnt excited enough to bark. he wont bark when i get it out to play with him either. dont want to burn him out so i only let him play with hide for few minutes. dont know if he would even bark at a caged coon? any tips to get a pup coon crazy? i know hes got the blood. just would like to see him get a little more excited.

The best way would be to wait about 4 or 5 months and then get serious.

I'll tell ya what, I was in the same shoes this spring.. I had two pups that were 3 or 4 months old and just wanted to hear them bark on a hide.. Well, they didn't do much at that age and I expected a whole bunch.. But now, both are treeing and soon will be hunting on their own.. Just let them be puppies.. Play with them and start on your commands.. If you want to, teach them to sit and to stay and to come to you when called.. You will be soo happy that you took the time to teach a pup these simple things.. Think of them as a little baby.. (thats what they are) They don't know anything yet and expecting them to do what the big dogs do is just too much.. Keep it simple for now and make everything a game.. Try not to loose your temper with them also.. If you find yourself getting mad or frustrated, it's time to put them away.. Hope this helps..

I ahve 2 pups out of my ace dog I let tehm out everyday they stay in the yard.Last Sat I took them for a walk for about a mile behind the house croseed a small creek they sniffe alirrle bit.Last nite I caught a caged cood put it about 10 yards from there cage let tehm out one of thenm didnt get but 3or feet from the cage and he bayed at it the other one started bayin to but didtn get to close.I put tehm back in the pen and let teh coon go.I was happy with what they did for there age.

Jim is exactly right...let them be puppies right now. Most are not ready to start till they are minimum of 6-8 mo. old. Many try to start them earlier but many pups are set back or ruined all together from trying to get too much, too soon. It wont make a better dog even if you do get the rare one that will start at 5-6 mo. old and the risk far out weighs the potential rewards. Most dogs are just not mentally or physically ready for serious training or hunting before 8-10 mo. of age minimum. You can test them on a cage coon starting about 6-8 mo. but don't over do it. If they won't bark at it wait a couple weeks and try again. Let the dog show you when IT IS READY to start. After it will bark at a cage coon and tree on it, work it a couple time a week for 2 or 3 weeks and then start hunting it at night for no more than an hour or so 2-3 times a week and try to walk it across some hot tracks. If it trees, kneel beside it and praise it and talk to it...for 5-10 minutes. Let someone else shine the tree while you work with your dog. Most dogs will start using this method as soon as they show interest in going after a cage coon....Good luck!

some dogs will finish into fine coondogs without ever paying much attention to a cage coon. Give ur pup a couple months then put em in thick coon and he'll be doin soon enough.

try this with your little pup. take your coon hide. (i only use a tail)
take it & throw it out in the yard some place. then go get your pup & walk your pup about 5 yards down wind. let him find it in the air. he does this a couple times. move to 10 yards. every couple days when he gets good at finding it move another 5 yards. move to a different spot in the yard every time. do it 1 time a day & as soon as he finds it take it away. dont let him play with it till he drops it & gets board with it.

forget the drags. this will get his nose off the ground. just let him find it on the ground. dont ever hang it up.

this is just a fun game for little pups. let him be a baby & dont push him.

i have a tree beside a building with vines growing up in it and onto the building, birds love to roost in it when i have a pup i will carry it over to the tree at dusk and pull on the vines an wow it makes my pups tree minded and they will start treeing , and helps make them gamey ,
i let mine be puppys as long as they want they run loose , when they are 4 mo old or so i will show them a coon if they dont want to bark at it thats ok , i wait 3 weeks do it again, untill they like it , never for more than just a few min and then i will praise them, always remember keep it fun dont let a pup bark at a coon to long and get bored with it

Its born in em. I didnt make this one coon crazy. She turned 3 months old Aug 9th. I caught a coon in the garden eatin corn last night. I thought what the heck. I'll see what she does. She went ballistic. Shes coon CRAZY.

personaly I start them on squirrel around 4-5 months with my feist dog then around 10-12 I switch to coon at nite caged then released that first taste with the feist gets them good tracking and locating and you will have less slick trees an old hillbilly uncle of mine taugh me that trick and it works...my fiest is around the same size as a 4 month old walker or english so they can keep up for the most part and there not way behind not learning
