?when to start hunting your pup hard?

When (at what age) do you start hunting you pup hard? I know some of you will say when they are ready. And if your that person; then what are they showing you to start hunting them more times a week or whatever. And how often do you takem. I don't have a pup trainer of any kind. I got a pup that at 4m old could tree a drag a preety good aways away. And stay treed till I got there. Crazy over cage coon. He's 5 1/2m now. And haven't fooled to much with him on hide or anything past month. Just went to the woods with other dogs and goes with me to fill a feeder now and then and to the creek with me and kids to swim. When i take him alone he hangs around me. I dont pet him. The few times I've took him with other dogs we never got on anything. Some drops he went aways with older dogs and some he stays around me. But nobody wants to go with me In The heat so if I go ill just have to go alone with him.

What I do with a pup like him is take hime by himself, walk him around he will tree coon by himself. Stay close to him and tie him as soon as you can near the tree. Give him every coon you can.He will start hunting better as he matures. I like training pups this way the most. Cory Price

At 5 months old I would be taking the pup alone for short hunts an hour or so and then back home. When you take the pup hunting try to resist the urge to walk around with the pup following you, instead let the pup take the lead and you follow the pup other wise the pup will follow you all night and when you stop the pup will stop. For the next few months that’s about all the pup needs and the pup may or may not start doing something on its own. As far as hard hunting goes I never hunt a young dog really hard until about 15 months old. I’ve had plenty that could tree coon alone in the wild from 6 to 12 months old but no matter how good they are I always put them back in the kennel wanting more. At around 15 months is a good time to really hunt a young dog hard 4 nights a week sometimes from dark till daylight. That may not seem like hard hunting to some but for a young dog that’s hard enough. I hunt them alone and with company in all types of terrain in all kinds of weather and watch as a nice young dog becomes an experienced hound by the age of 19 or 20 months old. Good luck with your dog.

I would say twice a week for an hour or so each time is plenty at this stage of the game. Increase as pup gets older 7 or 8 months.

Good Luck with your pup

You can start taking them at 6-8 months if they can keep up with another dog...hunt once or twice a week for an hour or so. If they can't keep up or don't have their mind on hunting, put them up and try again in a month or so. You won't hurt a dog at all by waiting till it's 9-12 months old before you start hunting them regularly. I would not hunt a dog hard(3-5 nights a week for several hours each night) until it is at least 14-16 months old and has been worked up to it through shorter session a couple times a week. Dogs learn by repetition but they also need time to reflect on a positive lesson...as well as a negative one as a result of correction. Never be afraid to let a dog think about either type for a day or two before taking them back out. I always try to end the night on a good lesson...or a correction for unwanted behavior...then let them think about that lesson for a couple days.
Just remember one thing, more dogs have been ruined by trying to start them too young than have ever been ruined by waiting a few extra months till they are both physically and mentally mature enough to start successfully.....Shane

Thanks shane. Ya he may need a little more time on the chain. I may take jim this week and see what he will do. If he wants to play and not hunt I may leave him at the house for a bit. Ill try to find an older dog to go with.

Not til' after puberty and their adult teeth are set firm ... you won't see this happen very often under a year old and most times closer to a year and a half .

Pups need to be learning , but until they are mature in that sense .... there is too much that can backfire with not enough gain from trying to show off how good a pup is to your friends .
