coonhound chronicles VII
last nights hunt,
started out real good. i was really excited for john to show up and see my hunting spots. i even called every neighbor for 500 acres and everyone said no problem, get rid of those coons. sooooooo, he gets here and i do the introductions to my husband and the rest of the "clan", and they(my husband and him) started talkin deer stories and finished watching the race. as i am sitting there impatiently wanting to hit the woods. we finally get the dogs loaded up and head on our way. i took him to the place i hunted skeet last fall 4 days a week, beside french creek(river). we pull in twoards an old pit and turn the dogs loose after a little walk. bye the way, took murphy with us. i am sure john was happy about an obese walker mix sittin in his drivers seat when he opened the door to get rollin.rofl.
anyways, we turned loose. both dogs got gone and in no time the are opening up. me , of course, was saying "see, i told you it was a good spot". NOTE TO SELF BEFORE THIS PROCEEDS ANY FURTHER, KELLEY, GET A SENSE OF DIRECTION,LOL. we head along the river bank, which thank god had gone down, twoards the dogs. sure enough, den tree. but before we can get to the dogs we were shining and sure enough , IN GOES SKEET. thank goodness that dog listens cause that river has claimed alot of lives and when it is that low, there is a lot of trees and stumps everywhere . we get skeet out and find out it was a big old den tree. no problem i tell john. both dogs leashed up and "i cant get lost here, i know this place" came out of my mouth. WELL, IT HAPPENED TO BE THE ONE CORNER OF THE THICKEST , SWAMPIEST CRUD YOU EVER SAW, that i didnt know. lol. needless to say, i saw the look through the darkness when i was going in circles through grape vines and everything. the last thing about that is i had told john, just over this hill will be the pickup, the dogs circled round. no problem. until i climbed this steep butt hill through brush to find out, i found the source of all the mooing. dang electric fence. cow pasture. who the heck knew that was there, lol.
so, i think i got a couple looks by now. i kept asking what the compass said and he said nothing. oops, he thought i knew it all down there. i am still laughing, now.
ok, cut the dogs again away from that part of the land i didnt know. corn fields along the river with a piece of woods riding the river. good grief, i hear buzz go off on a trail, cool. then i hear MURPHY, WONDER WALKER MIX. ha ha, i say, he never fails me. IF I WANT A RABBIT TONIGHT. and go figure, skeet figured that was an awesome find, thank god he didnt chase long cause by then i was mad and buzz was busy doing what he was supposed to be doing. and i kept saying, you think skeet got a coon on the ground in there??? always think positive til you get the dogs home, and then come up with plan B for the next time. SHOCKER.
then in the corn the dogs took off, everyone but the obese one that kept scaring the crap out of me coming out of the corn from nowhere. HE IS SILENT BUT DEADLY,LOL. the dogs started hollerin, both, from a distance and pretty soon we were doing the quick step through the wettest, scratchiest you ever saw. AND THEN WE READ THE GARMIN 400 YARDS PLUS AND GOING. ok, no problem. sort of. see, i realized we were darn near gettin to the property line. okay. garmin says 500+ yards, we can hear them. we had just trucked through thick pricker bushes and corn for about 50+ acres. AND THEN WE HIT AN OPEN SPOT AND KNEW WHICH WAY THE DOGS WERE. ACROSS ABOUT 100 ACRES OF MORE CORN still carrying on. what the heck. i swear at this time, both our shoulders dropped looking at the tree line in the DISTANCE. so, when all else fails, yell for skeet.
after a bit, garming started reducing yardage on skeet. 380+, 350, he was coming. THANK GOD, OOPS, WHERE IS BUZZ. i do believe, i might get this wrong by just a few, but when i started yelling, we could hear the dogs, WAY OFF, and garmin said they are treed. then they were off again, then treed at approx. 600 yards. skeet came in first, and sure enough, buzz came in after. we were so relieved at this point cause a few hours had elapsed since the first cut and we didnt know it til we looked across the expanse on corn.lol.
we leashed both dogs up, dont have to leash murphy, he is too fat to float and too fat to go very far.
on the way out i was telling him about a couple of the old trees we were walking by about how that was skeets first tree, and that is where skeet caught one on the ground. and sure enough, both dogs hit the end of their leads on their hind feet at the same time darn near. KITTEN COON. a coon is a coon is a coon. i dont think you saw the weary travelers come to life so fast in your life. COON I SAY. they winded. BIG OLD TREE. SAW THE EYES AND I WINKED AT IT.LOL.
needless to say, i still had a good time. wetter than heck again, and no rain. geez. we turned out at about 11pm and we got back to the truck at 1:47 am. still, 20 min. to my house and a hour drive for john back. i stayed awake til he got home. we both got to bed around 3:30am.
i really am starting to know what my dog is talking about. when , where, how and what. tri-=tronics might be in our future.lol.
ask john about the old camp fire in the middle of nowhere by the river that totally freaked me out. totally.
and the children of the corn.lol.
i have got to quick reading stephen king and dean koontz and definately STOP WATCHING SCARY MOVIES. especially if i am gonna run these dogs.
skeet never woke up until 10 am. guess i tired him out.
always an adventure and loving every min. of it.
does it ever go as planned??????? i am not keeping my hopes up for that one, , i am learning.
