How hard is it to house train a 6-8 month old dog??? Is it possible? I can see it being easier or harder...because its older...figured id ask y'all...



My friend is keeping my pup for me till I get back home...I thought she was going to keep him in the house for me but so far he is outside with the rest of his littermates...she gave them a horse trailer to sleep in and fenced in kennel to be outside and said none have ever went inside the trailer...that's pretty good!

I don't know if she will bring him in when we got them all new homes or if she's going to leave him outside till I come get him in November or so lol....

I can't really have an outside dog at my house...I can but he can't bark...and don't have a kennel or anything...reckon I could build him a dog house and bring him in if it gets super cold...but rather him learn to be a house dog....if possible...

Thoughts?? I don't wanna ask my friend to do anything for him other than keep him alive, healthy and fed and played with...asking her to house train him is too much IMO...then he chews up her house and goes on her floors...not good..so if she does, great..if not, I will deal with that...

When I first got into coonhunting I was running dogs in the summer for a friend who worked construction. They were outside kenneled blueticks that were between 6 months and a year old. I lived in town and had to keep them inside. I didn't have much of a problem with them as long as I crated them during the day when I worked. I had a house trained lab and used him to lead the bluetick outside to do his thing. Basically as long as I kept him on a daily routine, always as soon as I let him out of the crate, first thing in the morning, immediately after work, and as much as possible after I was home, he was fine. I had more problems with him trying to mark his territory than anything. I just kept a close eye on him & used a rolled up phone book to adjust his desire to mark territory. I have a 6 year old female that i raised from a pup and is completely house broken. No chewing or anything. Now she's a trash destroyer but we have ways around that as well. Good luck.

I was thinking he will be a bit older and more mature and hopefully smart....but at the same time that could make him more stubborn....

I will get him fixed likely right before I come home...my parents have 2 males and one isn't fixed and he marks everything...he's a little toy dog and only has 3 legs so they never disciplined him! They blamed my pitbull for it! Lol.


Hopefully he has manners and is a good dog lol...my parents will kill me if he's bad...he won't be home alone too often though...he's going everywhere I go this winter since I didn't get to be with him as a puppy...and needs to get out and see the world not be in a house...when I goto camp he's coming..when I'm running the trap line he's riding shotgun...when I'm hunting he can goto my buddies farm and play with his sister...I'm not home much..lol..

I had to keep my first coon dog in the house and he was 2 years old when I baught him. He was easyer to house break than any pup I ever had. I used a crate when I wasnt home.

the best coon dog i ever owned was a green papered kemmer cur. i got her when she was 18 months old. i kept her outside. i had to go to another state to work on a house. i took her with me in case i had time to hunt. i kept her in the house and from the beginning she never, ever made a mistake. she was a great road dog and house companion. the females are easier. now i have 8 mon old kemmer female. she was easy to train. she almost never pees in the house. yesterday we found that she had peed in our bed. but, it happens when you keep dogs in the house.

older hounds are easier to housebreak, in my experience, although I haven't had serious trouble with puppies either. Depends on the individual.
My two live in a second floor apartment in Brooklyn NY for part of the week and are just fine, despite having to go out on lead, with a long delay for locking doors, etc. The younger one had always lived outdoors before I got him at 1 1/2 years. He marked indoors once the first day and never had a problem again, after only a mild reprimand. If your hound is with you 24/7 as you describe, he will be responsive to your wishes. Should be very easy to housebreak.
Stealing human food will be a bigger problem--make sure you don't leave food out where he can get it!

Thanx everyone! I appreciate it! Being out of the "puppy" stage he shouldn't chew on furniture and shoes etc...I hope not anyways lol...and having a fenced in back yard and other dogs, I think he'll learn quick that the back yard is where he goes....

If I'm laid off this winter like been happening, I will get him in november..that will make him 7 month old or so...and I plan to do some major bonding with him since I won't get to till then...haven't seen him since he was 10 days old lol...picked out the biggest one with the most color and said I want him as long as he's not a fat lazy puppy and is playful...he's now the smallest male and my friends favorite that has the pups...kinda biased id imagine..she knew I wanted him and plays with him more than the rest and let's him out to run with mom...

I got lucky to have a friend like that...she's taking great care of him...
