well, we've seen threads for flies, fleas, ticks, etc. but I have not seen one lately for bees...or maybe yellow jackets to be exact...the ground dwelling ones.

I stumbled across a nest (literally) while washing out the poop in the whelping box. I took the bucket of water and turned it over to replace it and then *bam* my foot was hit (barefooted), then my arm. well the screaming and crazy person act ensued then I realized there was a nest in the ground. I saw about 20 or so flying around. Ended up bringing the pups in for most of the day...afraid they would get stung.

I have found the entrance hole and its in some grass (that needs to be mowed).

I have done some research and there are some extravagant solutions for the termination of them.
*wet/dry vac: suck them up & leave in sun for several days
*pouring lots of ice on top to cool them, cover in tarp or plastic, secure edges, let sun bake the following day.
*putting some chemical in the hole at high pressure to freeze them.
*hanging YJ traps - will probably do that too.

my solution is gas! the problem is that it is literally at the edge of the pen where the pups are and I dont want to piss them off and hurt the pups. not to mention, the other dogs walk around this area too.

gas will work great they will never come out so it want matter if they are mad.... wait until dark to ensure they are all in there then just pour in the hole.... gas will be evaporated by morning and all is well

If you have an old school bug zapper or can get one put ot out side of the pen so the dogs can't get to it and hang it in a little shade then put a medium size half cooked hamburger in the bottom in a couple days problem solved.My uncle is a bee keeper and he has then right beside his bee hives.Honey bees will not eat any kind of meat but yjs will attack hony bee hives so they would find the hamburger and the attack was over good luck

i would do the gas and do it at night then you wont have problems getting stung hopefully.

Get a two liter bottle fill it half full of deisel fuel wait till after dark stick it in the hole,let it drain down into the nest and no more yellow jackets

now that I have let the pups on the ground, this is just one more thing to worry about!

looks like the nights will be in low 70s until saturday then mid 60s. may have to wait til wkend to do it.

GAS got stung about 5 times yesterday mowing gassed them last night finished mowing this morn. no more yellowjackets

The deisel will evaporate though not as cleanly as gas but it won't hurt the dogs.We put deisel down around our pens it keeps the fleas away.As long as it dark you can treat the nest it doesn't have to be cold,thedark ensures there all in the nest that way there's no stragglers to rebuild.Also after dark they won't come out after you.

if you dont want to use gas beins that its so close to your dogs if you just buy some ole cheap liqiud dish soap and mix it THICK IN A BUCKET OF WATER OK PROLLY THREE BIG THINGS OF CHEAP DISH SOAP PUT ALL IN BUCKET THEN ADD SOME WATER SWOOSH IT A LIL NOT TO BUBBLY POUR ALL IN HOLE AT NIGHT WHEN THEY ARE NOT ACTIVE THEY DIE DUE TO THE FACT THEY BREATH THROUGH THE BODY AND THE THICK SOAP CLOGS IT UP AND THEY DIE IF YOU WANT TO TEST IT OUT ON A SMALL WASP NEST AND A GLASS OF SOAP AND WATER DO IT SO YOU HAVE FAITH HAHAHA GOOD LUCK

You could just go buy a can of wasp spray. You can stand several feet back and shoot it down the hole day or night. Night would probably be better so returning yellow jackets won't be flying around. Spray the whole can down the hole and it will kill any that it touches and the fumes will kill the rest, including the inmature ones.

Get a bucket of hot soapy water. Dawn dish soap. If you go out early in the morning they will be less active. I don't think there is a time they won't fly. The soapy water attaches to their wings and they can't fly. There's an active ingredient that will also kill them good luck and be careful.

I was leaning toward the dish soap, but now think I may go for the gas..either way I have to get some, so they have another day! they get up early. I was out at 615 and they were already flying.

Bill, someone else told me about the can of spray, but just a little concerned that I may miss and they wont!

does it matter if it dawn or a cheaper brand?

they will sting at night if you rile them up but just ease up there and start pouring the gas to them and dont stop... you should be fine... they will not be out flying like in the day time unless something stirs them up... i have got in several at night and also had dogs get in them.... a coon will dig them up and eat them lol

I'm anxiously waiting lol. I HATE wasps/bees with a passion!!! Just about the only thing I'm really afraid of. So I've been watchin this one closely to see how things turn out, likely I'll be throwing confetti and balloons when I see that ya kill em! hahaha.

We use Gas...Wait until after dark when they are less active. Key word here is "less".

Sam and his son had the great idea of going in after them after dark with head lamp on...Hahaha!! Not a real bright idea(excuse the pun on bright) As soon as they got close enough and turned the light on, those pissy little bees came after the light!!!! He was so lucky he didn't get hti all over his face!!! LOL ..He through the light on the ground and took off running.. the bees attacked the light like crazy!


Another time, Sam was mowing the yard and got into a mess of them..He had to abandon the mower, which was right on top of the entrance hole...Those bees swarmed that running mowing 4-ev-er it seemed. The mower which had just been filed ran out of gas after it got dark and he was able to go rescue it. The bees were taken care of with gas before day light the next morning.
