should i let my dog out to run free sometimes?

is it bad to let a dog out of his pen occasionally to get some exercise? we live on 40 acres and i have a two year old walker and i am still pretty new to this i hate leaving him in his pen all the time, i have let him out some but when i do he goes down in the little draw we have and i can hear him barking idont know if hes chasing rabbits or what. any suggestions?

if i noticed him treeing id put him up, he starts leaving trees when noone shows up, could cause a bad habit.

if he is going there everytime leash him up walk him there see what he is yap n bout you dont want him to be trash n on a possum or other critter if your plannin on usin him as a coon dog . Now to answer your question bout exercise i try to hunt as much as i can but when its far times in between i havent haad any problems lettin em run a bit heck ive loaded up the whole heard and taken them to a few dog parks just for social reasons i try and keep them socialized with new dogs constantly cuz i cant stand a dog that fights growls or nips other dogs in a hunt

Let'em Run

I let mine run some but I only do it in the daytime not at night anymore. I let a dog out one night and he got treed way up behind the house, well he had to stay treed cause I wouldn't getting poison ivy/oak for him.

Alright thanks I usually just let him out during the day time anyway and I built a little run thing with a steel cable on the ground staked it on both ends and the attached his leash to it so he can run up and down it plus as long as his rope is. And ya when I have gone to where ever is he is usually on a rabbit so I scold him and take him back to his pen. Thank you for all the help

Ya that run thing that we built works pretty good but I still wouldn't mind letting him out occasionally
