Charleston Illinois, Swim Pond

We are in the process of building a new box, Cutting brush and redoing the long idol pond. I will be asking for volunteer help to cut brush back and stack it and anybody wanting to donate cash for steel to build new box as Mark has offered to help build it. We have no time-line due to finish, it takes awhile to complete this project after years of setting idol. This will be for UKC registered hounds only. My son and I as of Saturday cleaned the north end so that old box could be seen and it is junk. We cleared back to hardwood. There will be more brush clearing sessions coming up. It took me awhile to think about this and some other club hunters talked about it to me about it I asked Mark and Daryl and they said ok. Our cable and crank assemblies are fine. So gentlemen please help with donation for steel and labor to cut and stack brush (that darn Russian olive).

You may contact, Jeff Ashmore at 1-217-218-2251

Thanks Jeff A.

Swim Pond Box - Donations

Just talking never finished a task, it takes labor to make it happen and some money to!!

Join us in making this happen, remember when you were young and went and competed at water races. Give the young people these memories also.

Just look at Brazil Ind. and the fine job they do. Flora also and many others I don't know. Make our sport grow.

Jeff, Frances Gail and I attend all kinds of hunts at our friend Elwood Simmons' place in Brazil, Indiana and we are long time members of the Flora club. Flora has been putting on swim races for quite a while. I am not trying to brag but I would bet I have attended more water races at Charleston than the rest of you all put together.

At this time, my health is not the best. I haven't even attended Bench Shows. So, that rules out much work. But, we may be able to make a modest donation that we would send to you. PM me your address.

How are you guys planning on pulling the cage? I reckon I have cranked 1000 or more races over the years but the last water race I knew of at Charleston, the cage was pulled by a rope by a person at the side of the bank. It is much easier than cranking but either way works.

Jeff, would hope my UKC registered Mountain Curs could race at the practice races. I know a UKC Water Race would be for hounds only as according to the rules at this time. I have a hound or 2 that might swim.

I used to love to race my hounds, not that I cared which dog won, but to give my dogs exercise in the summer. A few races a week will keep them in tough shape.

Send me your address.

I would be more than willing to lend some labor! My uncle used to have water races at his house on Lake Paradise in Mattoon. It was alot of fun and I would love to get in on swimming my dog and getting youth interested in the tradition of American Cooning!

Techno, I used to attend a lot of water races at Paul Johnson's. I attend many of the official races and we often met in the middle of the week for practices. I turned the crank alot at Paul's also. Paul races had a lot of greyhound crosses and they often wore muzzles. I don't want to race muzzled dogs any more. But, I don't think it will happen now days.

As I stated before, I wasn't into water races to win, I just found it a great way to keep my dogs in shape in the summer. My dogs won many Bench Shows because they were in shape. Plus, it was a great way to handle pups and get them used to different things.

Jeff, a check will go out in tomorrow's mail.

Before we get into water races too much, there are a couple of points I would like to bring up. I wasn't there, but I heard the last race Paul had there was some trouble with the law. Techno may know more than I do. I think it may have stemmed from some neighbors not liking the dogs . Today, there are anti's around that never bothered us in the 70s, 80s and 90s.

Also, we would probably need a live coon. Lots of folks that used to keep live coons are no longer with us today. There are alternatives but none as good as a live coon.

I reckon these 2 topics would better be discussed on PMs and in person than on an open board but I feel like they deserve some discussion.

Techno, I will bet your Blues are Thomas bred. I used to hunt with Bub some and have hunted with his brother.

Coon and Law

We will use a stuffed hide loaded with scent like the have for years at Kenton. The trouble with the law was it was a open swim race for money where dogs were given drugs. Anybody that has been around those things knows what goes on. Any dog at a UKC event that is thought to be drugged there will be blood taken and said person can be suspended for life. I have seen drugs used in water races and field trials money events and that is why I do neither now. I am a natural trainer and that is why I went back to hounds, family values and no drug events. UKC spells this out in it rules in a very plain way and they will be strickly enforced. Talking on a open board does not bother me and there is nothing to hide. I had this rules when I had my dog race there in 2005 along with a undercover sheriff. MY FEELINGS ON THIS ISSUE IS CLEAR CUT.

I will have a vet at these events, there will be nothing like that tolerated. These events are non monetary for titles only and in a family enviroment.

Thank you Dave for your check.

Jeff A.

May I ask, just to clarify for myself...Will you be having both UKC sanction events and Open events as well?
Alot of cross over talk about the open swim dogs and UKC coohhounds on these water race threads...Just want to be clear on your clubs future plans for the new swim pond
Good luck pulling it together!!

Thanks, Sabrina Smith

UKC Events

UKC Events now if we have a practice night it doesn't matter just no fighting dogs. Hardly any of the hounds around here has ever swam except to cross a river. So we will have to have some practices.

I like swim races just like I like field trials, having said that I have seen the drugs, steroids, homemade concoctions to try to make dogs more than are and what they do to the animal. Makes it rather hard on the natural conditioner or people that love to raise dogs.

This is a family coon dog and a family event. Things like above is what ruined the sport and changed the type of dogs. They became just a piece of meat for some folks.

Thanks for questions, therefore for the people that come there are no misunderstandings.

Jeff A.

Glad to say that over the last 3 years, I truly don't think we have ever come up on any drugging of any type. I hope as this event continues to grow, it will stay a clean event...Our kids enjoy this too much for it to be ruined in that manner.

Best wishes on pulling things together. I will be watching the progress and hopefully we can check it out at a future UKC swim race.

Jeff, I doubt if any of the problems Paul had at his races would happen at the club. The club will draw local hound owners, not the guys with the half greyhounds that wear muzzles. Like you said, most of the local dogs will not swim a creek or the river. In the past, almost all of the races held at Charleston had full hounds owned by local coon hunters. Heck, alot of them could barely get across the pond. The only reason I brought up Paul was to point out there could be legal issues. It used to be a great place to bring a pup and introduce them to water.

The club did used to sponsor UKC Swim races and we had folks as far as Michigan bring their hounds to swim at our club. I have some videos of them swimming around here somewhere. I do not remember ever making one of my hounds a UKC Swim Champion, I may not have ever won a UKC Swim Race.
