ok i usually dont ask for training help but i have a year and a half old female i kinda like she runs and trees never has slicked and wont back a slick tree the only issue is she wont bark treed once im 30 yards or so from her and some times she leaves and comes back...i think the reason she dose this is she is gun shy and i shot coon to her last fall also she dont care for a coon once it hits the ground she chews it a minute then thats it....so i dont know if i will shoot coon to her this fall or not but i was wondering what i can do to keep her tree minded once she sees me?

Accidently forget your rifle. Leash her up and go back to the truck and let her tree. When you go back she can't come to you so go the last bit real slow, she might be barking treed or barking for you but whatever she be barking and ought to get the idea it's ok to bark. Don't go in and pet her up. Start shining from wherever you would normally be shining. If she does good I'd shoot it out because i shoot most of mine out, but leave her tied so she can't get to it till it quits kicking, that ought to drive her crazy barking.
If I go in and pet mine up they normally don't say much while I'm shining. I think the are looking too. LOL And like my old buddy asked me when I first started hunting with him, Why are you petting a dog and you ain't even found a coon yet? Are you petting him for just treeing or treeing a coon?"

I had a pup exactly like you described, only he wasn't gun shy. It took me a whole summer to get him to tree till i got there and handled him. He would hush once he was handled until the day he died. No need to kill him a coon cared absolutely nothing about them when they hit the ground.

I would just stop when he hushed and wouldn't go to him till he started treeing again, however far it was. In the beginning I would go back to truck and sometimes it would be 30 min before he would crank up again. I would also go in with my light off when I could. He would still shut up if he heard me, I would just stop and wait him out. He didn't have this issue when he was hunted with another dog. Its a real pain, i guess you have to decide if she's worth it or not.

Lets see ? dogs that don't want coons particularly and don't much want to tree?
NO WONDER! What's the world coming to when that kind of behavior is acceptable??

The dog I spoke about would stay treed under any and all conditions, accurate, and was a lay up artist. treed his first coon by himself at 10 months old about the 2nd or 3 rd time out. He treed his first coon without knowing what a coon was. I shot out probably 10 coon before he ever put his mouth on one. He treed them on natural instinct, he's also the dog that taught me that not every dog needs a coon shot out to it.

The lack of desire to tree coons was not his problem, the problem was when he saw your light coming he would shut up. I did not accept the behavior, I worked with it till I got him to keep treeing until he was handled.

yeah she loves to track and tree and is a good tree dog but like i said once im close she hushes and dont tree bark while im there..but she dont care about a coon.....thanks for the input

I would just about bet that hound is quiet in the pen, very well behaved, and wants to please it's master. I have one that is/was like that, she is about the same age also. she would tree and then stop barking when she saw my light coming. she would not leave the tree, just quit barking. I also would stop walking and cut my light off when she quit barking. when she started barking I would start walking. Don't know if thats really what got her to doing better or the light switch flipped on. she has really gotten fired up on a few trees here lately and treed her heart out.
I have noticed when the other hounds slick she may be nearby trying to pick up the track but she won't be treeing any.

you got it on the tip of the head except the barking in the pen thing she is an everybreath kennel brker lol but she is smart and loves o please.....i did try the shut the light off trick and it works she barks until i get close so i tied her to the tree and slowly made a huge circle around her and when she shut up i shut my light off and she started treeing again im gonna try this a few times and see if she makes any improvements

I have dealt with this on several different occasions and usually there is a different reason as to why each dog does what it does. I think that the most common reason is that they know that you want them to tree a coon and now they have done their job and so they're thinking "you are here now, so come get me." I don't recomend going in the tree and handling them and backing out. Yes they might tree good while you're gone but they treed good the first time before you got there as well. And as you mentioned already she is gun shy and doesn't care to fight a coon that much , that is OK.
I believe that it is common to have a dog that shuts up when you get close to NOT be crazy about a coon. That is why she is shutting up, she has treed that coon for YOU and NOT for her. So when you get close she assumes her job is finished. The only way to break her from this is to stop the second she quits and shut your light off and wait. And like it has already been said you might be sitting there a while but this is the only way I have found to work. And you might have to stop and start 10 times in that last thirty yards but just be patient. When she finally does continue to bark until you get there, then make a BIG deal about it. Pet her up and talk excited to her and all that crazy stuff we do to show our approval. After all she treed that coon for you and her knowing that she pleased you will do much better than shooting it out to her especially since she don't like it anyway.

Maybe I`m alittle crazy but I like for mine to shut up once I get to the tree.I like for them to tree hard until I get all the way to the tree though.

i believe the dog barks to call you to the tree to help him. if the dog sees that you're coming, he doesn't need to bark. same thing when you get there except many dogs keep barking because they want you to help them get the coon out.

o know i totaly agree i like that she dont go crazy when i get there i just would like her to say a little so in a hunt if we walk in and she shuts up i dont draw any minus....but out side of a hunt i like not getting my ears blown out
