Question

All dogs go into a brush pile. Dog A opens up one time. Dog B opens up twice. None are struck. Then, all of the dogs come out of the brush pile and Dog A has a Opossum. What do you do?

My guess

It state's in the rulebook,dog/dog's running off game to be scracthed!!!!!!!!!!Dog a did not run it,Dog a just came carrying it out of the brush,So I don't think anyone should have been sracthed,That's just what I think.

If they barked at and killed a possum they should be scratched. If they had a bit of a scuffle that caused a couple barks over an old dead possum then hang it in the tree and run dogs.

I agree Jamie, Scratch them both. Call it a bad break or whatever. Dont have to be struck in to run off game. Unless you could physically see what happened I say they are scratched. Like I said could be just a bad break.

Guess Jed will have to answer. I was not there so I guess it depends on what was seen. The way it was worded I would have scratched both dogs. Regardless if it was mine or not.

As for off game - Is a dog scratched for sight chasing a squirrel and only barking twice? (handler did not strike hound)

Keep it simple - When the hound came out with off game in mouth anyone who barked should be scratched. WHY? Cause if it had been a rabbit I bet they would have wanted the plus points. Just my opinion, we will see what Jed says. I have been wrong before. LOL!!!

c'mon guys, I don't think the intent of the off- game rule was meant to apply to a dog that runs across a "possum and roughs it up. It was meant to apply to an off game chase and you know it. Course if I was worried my dog was going to get beat by a "Possum chaser I might want him scratched!

CSG, You're right about 'Possum being greasy when cooked, but they don't have to be. I ate a hell of a lot of 'Possum when I was coming up ( and I still eat one every now and then, not because I have to anymore but because I want to) There wasn't a wild 'Possum within 30 miles of my house when I was coming up , We, as well as all the neighbors had them caught out and was breeding them in our backyards and fatting them up for the Pot. Here is how you do it. Fatten him up real good and then when you skin him cut all of the fat back off, boil him down real good with a lot of Salt and three or four onions and a couple of whole Potatoes , this will keep the smell down as well as absorbing the grease from any left over fat. Fry him in cornmeal after that and lock the door .

Mitch Gould, Good dogs either way. CSG, we couldn't afford Groundhog. Only time I ever saw one when I was a kid, was at Christmas.
