ATTN: NC coonhunters...help needed

well, the current rules/rights of coon hunters is under fire again. there will be a Wildlife meeting in Raleigh in May, I think May 11. The issue is baiting during bear season using non-natural material - coon candy, dog food, kool-aid, etc. If this passes, anyone with a coon feeder that has anything other than natural feed in it (plain or soak corn, etc) can & probably be will be fined.

what is needed is COON HUNTERS to come to Raleigh in May to show their opposition to this proposed change.

I will get more info and post here. If you can come please plan on it. As more and more types of hunting (deer, bear) are attacked so is coon hunting and in order to keep being able to do what we enjoy and to be able to pass this tradition on to our kids, YOU MUST GET INVOLVED!!! do not sit back and think someone else will do it for you.

more details to come. if others have info related to this please post here.

This is not really a change, the rule is already in effect for all bear hunting counties. The rule is in place as a result of dental health issues in bears. NC Coonhunters has been in contact with NC Wildlife to possibly work a solution so that coonhunters might be able to use non-natural baits in small qtys (Bear feeders are usually 50 gallon drums, coon feeders are smaller) However we are not sure at this time what the outcome will be.

.

I will tell you, if it were not for folks helping feed coons with dog food and such, there would be even fewer coons in my area than what there is now!

Here's the wording straight from the regulations booklet. This section is in the Big Game section and is in the section for bear hunting.
"It is unlawful to place processed foods as bait in any area of the state with an open season for taking black bears."

It does not say the bait has to be for bears, simply put it states that you cannot place processed foods as bait in any area of the state with an open bear season. In fact based on interpretation it does not even have to be during bear season. This law was written, I was told, due to concern for bear dental health decline noted by biologists. The one biologist I have spoken to does not support lifting the ban and feels compromise has already been made in that we are still allowed to bait with natural food sources such as corn, fruit, nuts, etc. I am not sure what the folks David has spoken to have said, but the NCCHA is looking into the issue. In the meantime if you hunt in a county with a bear season you might want to stick to corn or some other natural food source if you like to hunt feeders.

IF THOSE BIOLOGISTS ARE SO CONCERNED WHY DONT THEY STOP MESSING STUFF UP FOR EVERYONE ELSE AND STEP UP AND DO THEIR PART. IF THEY WOULD JUST GO GET A TUBE OF COLGATE AND A BIG OLE TOOTHBRUSH AND BRUSH THE BEARS TEETH IT WOULD ALL BE TAKEN CARE OF.

The Big Game Commission is meeting May 11. They have not yet published their agenda, this is a quote from their minutes of the last meeting:
"the next meeting will be May 11. Agenda items will focus on bear and deer hunting season structures and historical harvest data."

In my opinion (for what thats worth) the big game committee is not the place to focus as they are focused only on big game and care only about their agenda, we will be better served to attend the local zone meetings across the state which are held with the sole purpose of changing and modifying existing hunting and fishing laws. I think we will be well served to try and have coonhunters at every one of these meetings to speak about this issue with hopes of finding a compromise. Having said that i think it is worth keeping an eye on the agenda for the Big Game Meeting, if they add the issue specifically to their agenda someone should definately represent coonhunters.
