Buy a long range antenna for the garmin and you'll be surprised at the distance. Tracked mine out to 6 miles the other night. Never lost the signal.

The other night my friend lost my 2 collers at 300 and come 2. Find out they wore on the side of a road.

If you're getting only 300 yards, there is a problem with the garmin. Sounds like the antenna on the garmin hand held is had.
Common problem.
