That's when I sit down and wait until the pup goes back out and hunts....No matter how long it takes.

Maybe somethin out there went bump in the night and scared the pee out of her. Seriously though I have had the same thing happen a couple of times and i finally figured it out. I had my dog quit a tree one night and come back to me before i could get to him, i was mad as hell and about to apply the ol boot leather cause this dog knew his business. and then i noticed somethin really was botherin him and he kept lookin around and starein into the brush and then a pack of coyotes opened up and went to howlin, i looked at him snaped my lead on him and we went home. Came back the next day and got a double on them varmints. Im shore you got yotes down there and maybe thats it. there have been a few hounds pulled down and killed by coyotes around here and you cant blame the dog for showin good sense of course this may not be your problem. Good luck.

It sounds like the dog ran in on a gang of coyotes, and maybe was watching out for you. Years ago, when the coyotes had first started around here. I had my 2 males out, had treed one and they had started another track, when both dogs came in. I didn't know what had happened to get them in, but soon found out when the howling started ! There was about 8 all around us as we started to the truck, the old male walked in front of us , while his nephew backed his way across the bean field behind us. The coyotes followed us the whole way, staying just out of range.

young dog

now that i think of it,my old female did the same exact thing your describing.she was running a rabbit.Cottontale.taking her sweet time going very slow.saw the rabbit popping around here and there.she was about two at the time.she turned out to be a excellent coondog, so it wasnt a big issue..what stunned me was she treed quite a few coon that year.and a nite earlier we shot a 29 Ibs coon down to her.shes young so i wouldnt worry about it.

Could she possibly be getting ready to come in heat for the first time? That can make them get really strange! I can tell when my female is getting ready to come in heat because she just gets down right stupid!

She has already been through her first heat cycle may possably be getting ready for her 2nd... took her last night with a nother dog and she hunted fine maybe its were she hasnt been hunted by her self in a while she is got loads of potential already seen her under her own coons... she would stay in the woods by her slef but i like to have someone else with me when i go and its hard to ask your buddys to leave their dog behind. if we had time we would make single turn outs with one dog at a time
