when to start a pup?

Just picked up a 4 1/2 month old pup last week. He is now used to his new home, and comes when called. Is he too young to take hunting? How about with other dogs?

Your opinions are appreciated.
Thanks

Chris, just about every one will have a different answer to this, as bloodlines are as different as handlers. I like to wait till I feel a pup is big enough and strong enough to hang with one older clean running dog. Ive had pups start at 4 months and some at 8, and feel when they are ready they start.
I wouldnt put a 5 month old dog down with a pack, as it may get overwhelmed and start dog tracking or being mouthy...or even blown up!

Keep the trips to the field short and fun for the pup, and keep it knee deep in rabbits! Instincts will soon kick in and before long you'll here squeeks and yipps from the pup. I like to start mine with a older dog, then start soloing after they put it together.

Good luck with your pup and have fun!!! Thats the most important thing!

Rick

Same here...it just depends on how much time u have to put into..you're pup may very well start at 4.5 months old. I've started a couple at 4 months. However lately i've been starting at a later age b/c i have other dogs i'm working too..I have a good puppy trainer and like for them to be physicaly able to keep up with him....if you start a pup solo and have the time you can start at a much younger age...if you're ready to work him now then by all means just keep up with him once he is started and give him plenty of opportunity in the field all the way through the 18 months of age range.

what ive seen!

Ive took em out at 4-5 months old and yes they are a lil young and cant keep up threw the brush and tree tops and will get lost-- the most important thing that I see comes outa that is they will start scent trailing for the older hounds and while there a lookin fer them they also pick up rabbit scent on the ground! I feel this is fail free ifin you only brace em with a couple hounds not a huge pack! Like others have stated keep it short no more than 3hrs and no more than twice a week! IT HAS WORKED FER ME!
