Dewclaws??

Just read on another post someone mentioned a hound having dewclaws....Dont ever remember hounds that we've had in the past having them....but seems now some lines have them and some pups in the same litter have them and some not have.

Where do you think this is coming from?

Refering to the English breed, but would like to hear answers on all breeds.

dewclaws

I know Dobermans have them and they clip them off at birth when they dock their tales....so why wouldnt you do this to hounds too?

They are prevalent in many breeds but people cut them off. I like a dog with them. An old saying is that a dog with dew claws wont die from snakebite. Never tested it myself.

it comes from the original cur dogs that was crossbred with hounds to give the hounds some smarts to keep themselves from getting killed when used on big game,,

then along came the $$$ signs and people started putting papers on them to make it easer to sell them and clipping the dewclaws was a market thing,
dont have a thing to do with the dogs ability, but tells people their family tree has some off blood in it,

most likely the ones with dewclaws might be a little better dog if they dont have a bunch of weekend wonder crap added to the family tree.
back when it was done (crossbreding)it was to make better gamedogs ....

Thanks for the info

I did see in the English breed standards where it says Dewclaws must be removed so I assume they've had them awhile.

I had a walker pup about ten years ago that had them, but that is the only instance I have ever seen in a coonhound.

Do you mean rear dewclaws? Because most of all dogs have front dews.

I have heard a lot of old timers in years past say that the dewclaws were a indicator of cur blood, I don,t know myself but a lot of the Mtn. Cur strains did have them.

So, if a dog has white toenails, that is to be faulted in an english dog?

White toenails

It isnt a fault, I was just pointing out that most english strains dont have them but a couple do.
Dont take this wrong I'm Not putting anyones dog down for having them.

What made me wonder about this is.....I bought a 8 week old pup this summer, when it got out of the haulers box I noticed the white nails right off...Caught the darn thing "pointing" out in the yard three times the first week I had her.....Needless to say I shipped her down the road....Then come to find out she's been split treeing and haveing the coon since she was 6months old!!! LOL
So go figure.

taken from wiki answers,
Rear dewclaws

Canids have four claws on the rear feet,[4] although some domestic dog breeds or individuals have an additional claw. A more technical term for this fifth claw on the rear legs is hind-limb-specific preaxial polydactyly.[5] Several genetic mechanisms can cause rear dewclaws; they involve the LMBR1 gene and related parts of the genome.[5] Rear dewclaws often have no phalanx bones and are attached by skin only.
Mike, from what I understand this gene or genome is triggered by tight line breeding. if two dogs both have rear dew claws they might never produce a pup with one.

I had this same discussion with a UKC judge in our area. I asked him what the dew claws had to do with the performance of the dog. He didn't really have and answer, but he did say because the rules say that they cannot be shown.

If you look at the genetics of all hounds, there is a mix somewhere to make the breed. Just like horses. There are only a few pure bred horses. Specifically two. (another argument)
But all of these hounds came from a mix of breeds to promote one of the now known breeds. Just like in people, sometimes there is a distinctive gene that comes through causing some sort of genetic flaw.

My personal opinion is that if a dog is to be judged on his confirmation, he should be judged in a way that is comparable to what he can do in performance. So, if a dog has a good hip and back and shows strength in his shoulder and ribcage to give him plenty of lung space so that he can do his job, I think that should be judged as a plus. As far as the ears and the head go, I think that the hound should have plenty of ear and a longer nose so that he is able to pick up the scent of whatever he is hunting. Hounds should be pleasing to look at, but they are built for performance and that should be the issue. I don't believe that dew claws have anything to do with the performance of a hunting dog other than the fact that they can get them hung up on something and can be easily torn.

This is just my personal non professional opinion. Although the conformational judging or aka Bench Dog has gotten to the point that it is very political, just like any other sport. I have seen dogs who didn't show at all, they had to be drug around the ring and refused to stand on the bench get the trophy just because of the person who is showing them or because they had a certain name on their papers. I think that this is part of showing in anything, it does happen regardless of what they say. I would hope that the coon hunting judges would set an example to our youth in that it doesn't matter who the handler or the owner is But unfortunately, that isn't the way the world is now, I can't change that, I just have to learn to deal with it and play the political game the best way I can without being immoral about it. Enough said.
