I know it will kill tapeworms which is what I use it for. It also has Ivomec so when I worm them with it I skip my normal Ivomec dose for the month.

If I suspect anything other than tapes I use safeguard which is an all purpose wormer and a lot safer.

Having said that I havent used Zimectrin or Safeguard in a while now because I have been using the Diatamaceous Earth wormer made by Mearacle.

I use it when I suspect tape worms, It also will get rid of about any worm that gives a dog trouble. I just use zimectrin once a month other wise. Never have much problems with worms. Ron

I will start using it at about that age. Do put it on a piece of bread with peanut butter or something, it can be hard on a dogs throat as it is very bitter, they can also learn to not like it if given straight from the tube. Ron

It is next to impossible to properly dose a dog with horse wormer because it is not as simple as converting the weight dosages. Per 100 lbs of horse IS NOT the same as per 100 pounds of dog. You wanna risk it, go ahead.

I'm with Jim on this... The Zim does have good ingrediants for wormers , but I think it is better to buy them separate and dose them according to what is prescribed for dogs. JMO.

Thats why you calculate it based on the percentage of the ingredient in the wormer and the amount of wormer per gram.

You cant go by the horse dosage.

I figure it up solely on the percentages and do not even pay attention to the amount it says for horses.

Now the safeguard is another story. It is called safeguard for a reason because you have to give a dog a whole lot to overdose it, I mean a WHOLE LOT. Therefore with safeguard I just give each dog a about a 50 lb horse dose.

My vet said DO NOT use a horse wormer on dogs because it has alot of "fillers" in it and you just dont know the actual dose of wormer they are getting............one worming you might get almost all fillers and next worming you might get too much worm meds.................

What do you use for worming your dogs Jim..............Tim

With Zim Gold you have two different main ingrediates. It is extremely difficult, if not impossible to get the right amount of both for a dog. If you do like Virgil says, you may get it right for the Ivo but you will have the wrong amount of praziquantiol. If you get the Prazi right, you will be wrong on the Ivo doseage.
Horse wormer os for horses.

both of these are are horse wormer with weight notches on syringe.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Alright...here is the bottom line, without going into all of the numbers.

Don't give this to your dog! These tubes of wormer are dosed for horses and NOT for dogs. If the dosage for each of these medications were the same between horses and dogs, I would not have any problems giving it to dogs, but quite frankly...they are NOT the same.

Example: There is enough praziquantel in each tube to treat a 1200 pound horse. HOWEVER, you would have to give the entire tube to a dog that weighted 70.4 pounds. (if you want to check the math, there is a total of 240 mg praziquantel in each tube, and the correct dosage of praziquantel for dogs is 3.4 mg/pound)

On the other hand, the dosage for Ivermectin in dogs is vastly different than for horses as well. So in combination, there is really no "correct" dosage when these two drugs are combined for horses.

You would not want to give your dog that much Ivermectin in one dose, but it would take the whole tube to get the correct dose of praziquantel.

As MBD stated, buy the Safeguard goat wormer...(I get it in a 125 cc bottle for about $20.00) this should take care of round worms, hookworms, whip worms. (a 125 cc bottle will worm about 60 doses)

You can now buy praziquantel over the counter. D-worm tapeworm tabs has the active ingredient listed as praziquantel. You can buy these for about $15.00.( you only need to treat your dog once ever three months or so)

The dosage for ivermectin differs depending on it's use. There are some real dangers of toxicity with this drug, and while it's safe to use on dogs, I would not give large amounts to my dogs on a monthly basis. I use it ONLY for the treatment to prevent heart worms. I buy the 1% injectiable, give it orally at the recommended dosage. Total cost is about $20.00 a bottle. ( 100 CC bottle will do 200 dogs at 1/2 cc per month)

I know it sounds much cheaper to buy a $10.00 tube of stuff that has enough wormer in it for a 1200 pound horse....but in the long run, you end up underdosing with one ingredient, overdosing with another, and your dog still has the problem.

$50.00 out of pocket should give you enough of the three different treatments to keep your dog healthy for many months

I got to thinking about dosing based on the length of the Digestive Tract (DT) versus weight of a horse to dog.

So I did a Bing search "digestive tract lenght of dogs" and up popped "Comparison between the DT of Carnivore, Herbivore and Man". I peeked at it and have already found the the dog DT lenght is 6 times longer than it's body.

Haven't got to the herbivore(horse ) yet because I got out of it to tell ya'll before you go to bed.

What got me to wondering was if roundworms are only in the gut then whatever % of poison it takes in a horse should be about the same as a dog except that the diameter of the pipe through a horse would also be bigger in a horse (for worms attached to the Lining). But hookworms could be throughout the dog so you need to poison the whole dog based on weight.

anyway that's all I found so far and I'm getting back out to check it out.
