Bench help

I am looking for some tips when it comes to showing a dog on bench. I have never showed any of my dogs but I would like to show the one I have now. I am clueless when it comes to the bench so any advice would be appreciated. I do know you need to start working with them when they are young but my pup is already a year old so I am behind!

Never too old to train

If the dog is well socialized, learning to walk on a loose lead and to jump onto the bench AT THE END in stead of from the side is a good place to start.

He is hyper as can be around other dogs. When I hunt him with other dogs he wants to pull and pull to go meet them. I was worried about that but I guess as he gets older and with more training he will get better.

See if your local kennel club has classes. Our area has classes that you can go to which will teach your dog to heal and to stand up on command. The worst thing in the world for a bench dog is no control over him/her. Then, take your dog to places where there are people and other dogs. Work him on the leash around them. Allow strangers to pet him, this is called socialization. Also, when you work your dog on a leash tell him to "watch me". So that when he works on the leash, he is happy and he is always paying attention to you. Then when you work him on the bench, do it in small increments of time. Try to get him to stand up a little more each day. Put your timer on, make it for one minute, then two and so on. He needs to learn to work when there are a lot of distractions. That will help you a lot. Take him to bench shows and let him see what other dogs are doing. But make him happy to work for you.

Thanks for the great advice mmranch and skyblu. I am having surgery next month and I will be off for a month so I want to work with him every day while I have the time. Hopefully he can learn the basics during that time

Good luck with your surgery! I would try to spend as much time with your dog as you can while recouperating even if it is just sitting and petting him and talking to him. I don't know about how you feel about letting him in the house, but I have found the best hunting dogs are raised in the house. They pay attention to you more and they are used to being around you. When you take them hunting, they try to please you more.

Some of the old fuddy duddy people who are squeamish about keeping a coonhound in the house say that it is spoiling them, but I disagree. When a dog is in the house, they are with you more and they learn to read your body language more and they learn manners. I think that is so important when you are hunting a dog. I used to train Labs and the ones I trained were always welcome in a hotel room.

if the dog is very old and want hill or load coming out of
the woods you just as well give it away

I raise all my pups inside until they get a few month old then they go outside running free. Once they start running the cats or anything else I chain them. I think raising them inside for awhile really helps them.

The pup I want to work on bench with knows how to heal and load but he gets excited around other dogs so I need to work on that.
