With the cold weather setting in, just wanted to see what anyone is doing in their kennel or dog houses to keep their dogs warm.

their dog houses full of straw! fresh water every day an more food than u normaly feed! seems keep em happy an looking good !

Insulated dog houses with external insulation on all sides tucked behind several out-buildings making them completely out of the wind.

Fresh straw.

Lots of fresh water.

Feeding the best food I know of dividing twice daily (morning and night).

Outside of heating the dog houses or keeping them inside I can't think of anything else I can do

up here in michigan i have a 10x10 kennel off the ground roof over top in the winter i put the dog eared wood fence panels around it to block wind.i use plastic barrels full of straw with a flap on the door.i drilled holes in the bottom of it for moisture to release.been using this for 6 years never had a problem.water twice a day.ron

I use a piece of conveyor belt for the door. I cut it for a loose fit and hang it by 3 hooks

Feed twice a day.. I add warm water to their food to make sure they are getting enough water when it is cold out.. Lots of straw in houses.. I change the straw often..

I have a dog yard coming off my kennels... I've noticed if I leave the dogs out in the yard to pick their own kennels and houses, they usually sleep 2 dogs to a house.. Guess they have it figured out

I use alot of straw and I use a plastic barrels I make sure they have plenty of water and food. I woundered about how to put a flapper door on them when you put hooks on do you cut the flapper so it moves in between the cut in the barrel?

Just tight dog houses with flaps and plenty of hay. All they want to eat twice a day. Water there for the drinking.

It all starts with a good dog house, with a door on it. I have K-9Kondo Dog Den2's...best houses made if you ask me. Keep the bedding fresh and "lofty", straw is the best for cold weather but it mats down and loses it's insulating properties so keep it changed and fresh, I change the bedding in their houses every weekend. Give them plenty of food twice a day and fresh warm water. It's ok if they gain a few pounds this time of year, I like seeing them a little heavier in the winter. I also pour hot water over their food morning and night. A hot meal warms them up and they sure enjoy it. Also, since they spend a lot of time in their houses this time of year give them plenty of things to chew on...helps with the boredom. I throw plenty of pig ears, knucklebones, and rawhide chips in their houses. Those hollow leg bones are good too, pack them with peanut butter...they'll lick at that for hours and sometimes days..and it'll help add calories to their diet.

I probably dont need to, but I'm thinking of installing a "hound heater" in each house. They may not be needed because in the 5 years or so that I've had those houses out there the dogs have done fine but, I'm a believer in doing everything you can for the dogs, we owe them that.

Here's what I do:
My Redbone is in an outside kennel with a top over half the kennel to keep the rain out. He has an Igloo dog house with a door, full of wood shavings. I also have a Hound Heater installed in the house. This is a heater made especially for dog houses that will turn itself on and off as needed. Just for good measure, I have bales of straw in front of the door of the dog house to block any wind the door doesn't. Been pretty cold at night down here in TN lately. I believe in keeping them WARM and well fed.

Quality feed, dry bedding and a box out of the wind. Provide those things and a healthy dog can survive about anything.

I have my dog houses rigged up with a heat lamp, straw and door flaps...Temperature seems to stay in the 50's+

Matt, I have the newest Hound Heater--it's the one with the thermostat that turns on and off as needed.
I like it so far although we are just now getting a chance to test it out. I haven't put a thermometer in there but the heater is working and it feels warm in the house when I put my hand in there. The key I think is to have an insulated house so the warmth stays in and also to have a door on the house. I don't think it's going to run the electric bill up. I understand they are pretty energy efficient.
I'd recommend getting one for an outside dog. Dogs can survive outside but I want mine to do more than that. I want them to be comfortable if they can't be inside with me.
