coons

i'm the same way!i'm not going to get harassed all the way from tree to tree for ten dollars either.i like to get the young dogs going w/a little fur in their mouths, but in sw pa you can't kill every coon you tree.we do have some coon but you start killing them 3 at a time, the number of trees you make will drop fast.

Old dogs get about 1 a month, maybe 2 or 3 if they are being hunted real hard, like 4 or 5 nights a week. Knock out a few more when I am starting a young dog. Overall I probably knock out about 20 coon a year.

bust several down just because we can here... We have alot of coon here the past several years... When we stopped shooting em the population grew and mother nature took over and that was not pretty.. So when we notice a population growth we crack em out. When it levels out so do we... Certainly not all of em... Guy in Pittsburgh must be nuts. Fur is not prime yet, certainly not the smaller ones... I'm only 10 miles from Pittsburgh maybe he is box trapping in town, those city coon that live in storm sewers never prime up...

It depends. If I am starting a young dog and it is its first season, I will shoot it some coon. It I am not I may shoot a few, but it isn't the reason I coonhunt. Taking the gun and skinning in the woods is #1 a disgusting process and I get sick of being a greasy mess from drop 1, takes me at least 15 minutes extra per tree once I find the coon, get it on the ground, get it hung, skin it, get everything put away and then I got to carry the thing out for maybe $5. It cuts into my hunting time so much that I can make an extra drop if I just skip it and keep hunting. Plus, I like going out and just hitting tracks in 5 minutes. Its just how I like hunting.

Coonhunting is just that, coon HUNTING, I just personally don't like the process unless I really feel like it is going to benefit the dog.

Ours are so thin we dont shoot out any. It is going to be worse this year as we dont have a live oak acorn crop at all. Going to be a tough winter on game of all kinds.

Killing

Shoot out all that we can. Because of so much corn in the area, no natural predators, and the fact that no one hunts coon we have a huge population. Also many land owners wont let others hunt or trap on their land. So coon populate those areas and then spread out.

i will take what i can. we havent had a good population in 10 years so not killing them doesnt seem to help. i will only take the biggest though. i will carry out a $10 dollar coon cause they are simple to skin and put up and that $10 just jumped to $15 or so

We harvest about 100 a year between nov. 15 and when the weather keeps us home. Years back that was about 3,000 bucks now its about 500. but t still buys some dog food. If we dont take em mother nature will.

We don't take every one that we tree, but we aren't shy about pulling the trigger. Most guys we ask to hunt their land want them gone, they make a mess in the corn. Populations are wild around us, they aren't getting targeted hard by the trappers and there seems to be standing crop every winter now so the coons, along with everything else, overwinters well, and has good feed as soon as they wake up in the spring.

We probably kill 130 a year that is year around. We change up our hunting spots. We have alot of different land we hunt, so we can work on a spot then give it a break. Two Legit summer spots, and three legit winter spots with a few extra spots here an there. All the spots you can hunt all night with no problem, so there is alot of land to be hunted.

Before this past saturday my previous record was 7 coons in one night. The record got changed to 20. When you get into a place with that many coons you almost have to thin them out or you can expect them to get distemper and thin themselves. On a normal night in the fall we'll get 3-5 and there are still plenty of them to run year after year. Gotta shoot according to population, at least that's what we go by.

Kill 1 per night in kill season. After 1 is killed the gun stays in the truck.

I shoot about 3 a week. So that works out to about 150 a year if the winter isn't to bad. I've been hunting the same spots for 5 years and it don't seem to hurt the population. We have a load of coon here in central oh

If it's a young dog, maybe 1 in every 3 trees. Old dogs get 2-3 over a span of a couple of nights during coon season. We have plenty of coons around here and a lot of farmers want you to get as many as ya can. We always leave a few to tree in the off season
