Boot leather and woods time. Maybe work it on a cage coon a time or two to get his interest up and then keep putting him in a woods with good coon tracks. It takes time on some.

Really need more information. Do you walk hunt or cast the dogs? Is the pup being hunted alone or with other dogs?

Sounds to me like you are getting in tooooooooo big of a hurry with your pup. Some start early. I have a 4 month old that is going like a ball of fire; my buddy has a 7 month old that can tree an easy coon. They are the exceptions not the rule. Most pups take time and patience to see them mature. I know of one very fine 5 year old hound, that just barely would bark at a coon at 14 months old. He is now an above average coondog. Very capable of doing it by himself.

Time, Patience, and lots of understanding

I had a pup that was over a year old before he left my feet. One night the other dogs treed the other side of a Beaver pond and we got in the truck and left him so he had to go thru the woods and pond to us and the other dogs. I never had a problem with him not going with the other dogs after that night. He went on to make Night Champion and was a real independent hunting dog. I know what you are going thru. It really makes you feel bad when all of the other dogs including pups younger than yours go hunting and yours is still at your feet Just don't give up on him. Larry

He's not a Bluetick by some chance? Mine was

how big is the pup?does he load, lead, mind?
what is the avg start time for that strain?
some just dont make it.

p.s if 2 coons is all you can show after cherries and corn
you may take up possum hunting.

I have only hunted him 5 times so that is why he has only seen 3 coons. He will treed a drag and stay tree for as long as you let him. He just won't hunt I am going to try and get a live coon and see what he will do on it. some people tell me this should help. if anyone has any more ideals on what i can do feel free to tell me for some reason i just don't have much luck with pups. maybe something i am doing.

if you've hunted it only 5 times you don't have enough information to discuss. the dog is still very young. give yourself and the dog several more months and then you might have something to discuss. the dog is, in my opinion, too young to expect anything from.

My bluetick just turned 2 in arpila dn she just started treeing by herself and with other dogs... she was more of a tracker/ feet licker than anything she wasnt interested in the treeing/ hunting until now and truthfully I was to the point where I wanted to trade her for something else just give the pup time

Bootn a dog in the ass or shocking is pretty sorry advice. I have tried both methods and you can make one disaper but you can't make a dog hunt. It has to come natural. Making them go will always come back to haunt you when you need them most.

The first thing I would do is stop reading the "stud dog ads" where every pup is split treeing at six months and is just "poised" to win the super stakes. These kinds do exist, but they don't come in bunches, like grapes. Hounds learn from exposure, and later repetition; you have to give a dog exposure, until his genetics "kick in". No more than you have hunted this pup, you have no conceivable idea of what he is capable of; just keep hauling him and turning him loose and don't get in a hurry. Every good experience with hounds happens in its own time frame; it is difficult to expediete the situation. Tom

Its hard when everone elese pups is going out threre. and i got the only pup that stays at your feet. but i think everone pups is just out there. because they will not run track or treed. I do not won't to give up on this pup. he has some good blood line in him. do you all think a cage coon would help?

time

Alot of good dogs are culled because they didn't meet unreal expectations.Give him some time in the woods,he is your dog not your buddy's.If this is a dog that you want to train and keep for several years to come, then give him a fair shake. It is true some make it and some don't,you have to do your part, and give him every opportunity to make.Everyone has different ideas about training, try using your own.Just MY opinion.
