I have a dog (treeing Walker)that is just over a year old. She will hunt decent and is a wonderful tree dog. She will not hunt with other dogs. We are beginners and when we go out with a friend she will only hunt by herself,but she does hunt. My husband says she is worthless and its because i made a pet out of her. We have only been out 3 or 4 times, and i feel like she has not been given a fair chance to prove herself. Should i keep going with other dogs and trying, do you think she will eventually tree with other dogs. I kind of wanted to competition hunt.

We went out by ourselves 2 nights ago treed, killed a coon and back home in 20 min. So i know she has it in her.

Any advise would be welcome. Thanks

I make pets out of mine too. I pet mine in the woods if there around and will make pups sit at times when trying to hear other dogs. I have a 2 yr old dog that hunts alone mostly he has to track it himself. 90% of the time he doesnt back another dog at all but if another dog backs him there is no problem. I would keep putting her in the woods and if she dont go with other dogs so be it. She may just be very independant. Who wants a me too dog ?

I have a male that is the same way. When he first started he most of the time wouldnt even hunt if turned out with other dogs. Now he is going off by himself more mith other dogs. When cut by himself he looks like a totally different dog. He hunts like a million dollar dog. They call that being independant. If she can learn to go off and do her own thing with other dogs around then you will have yourself one heck of a dog IMO. Keep hunting her. Dont force her to go with other dogs just keep putting her in therewith them and see how she comes along.

the dog needs a lot more time and experience. make a pet of it. all my dogs and others dog that i work are pets as much as i can make them.

Hey, I said I was a beginner. I've never even been to a competition hunt, I don't even know how it works.

when i said i would not give up i meant that I will not quit treating her like a pet, I believe a dog that truly loves you will work miracles for you when you ask them to.

I have always thought this dog was really special and it really made me feel better to hear what everyone is saying about her.

Acually she was the runt of the litter and from what i can tell she is the best one. The dogs that i have been hunting with are her mother and a littermate to her.

I knew i had something good when i showed the guy i got her from a video of her treed on a den tree at about seven months old by herself and his mouth fell open speachless.

If she is going out alone and doing it on her own then thats great. Its hard to find a young dog that will go away from the other dogs strike a track up and tree a coon so really thats good depending on what type of hunting you wanna do.

you said you were a beginner so ill do my best to describe why people are telling you this advise...

in a night hunt, the dog that strikes a track first is awarded the most points, and the dog that trees first is awarded the most points..add your track points to your tree points and thats your score for that perticular dump..you do this for 2 hours of hunting time. the dog with the highest total score at the end is your cast winner.

that being said, you need a dog to tree first, or better yet tree ALONE so your getting points while no one else is. that is why your female treeing alone all the time is a GOOD thing and should be encouraged and reward her with her coon.
