old dog going done hill

Went out to feed yesterday and my old dog didn't come out of his house. He has been in good shape untill now. He turned 13 back in May. This mourning his food was still in his bowl and he was laying out in the sun. Tried to get him up and his legs are week, he just lays back down. Got some turkey out of the house and he wouldn't eat that either. Got a big sirenge and tried to put some water in his mouth but he wouldn't drink it. He doesn't act like he is in pain and he will get up and move 4-5 feet then lay down again. I think he may just be heading to the other side. Our coon season starts tonight at midnight and was going to try and take him a time or two but it looks like he may not make it. I've had him since he was a little over a year old and man does it hurt to see him down. I don't know what to do, I don't think the vet can help. Think he is just at the end of the journey. Never had a dog this long except him and it feels like he is one of my kids or something.

GIVE HIM LOVE!

Just let him know you love him... tell him quietly that it is OK to leave if it's his time... and if he is going to get well that you'll be ready for that.... It is awful tough to lose an old bud. You will know if he is in pain and needs to either see the vet or be put down humanely.... It won't make it hurt any less but please know we are sending you thoughts and prayers. Both Bob and I have a soft spot for older creatures of any sort(even human!)... but especially a hound.

Take care and remember you've done well by him for him to be this old!

Heather and Bob

i have a 12 yr old feist. she's my first dog and she dieing. i have to call her for snacks. she used to go to the table when my wife called me for dinner. now she can't hear and i have to go get her. she doesn't wait by my chair anymore. she sleeps most of the time. i still take her for walks and for rides in the truck. she's got a tumor in her bladder in a place the vet said is hard to operate on. so i give her antinflamatories and antibiotics. she has to go pee through out the night and it takes her a long time to go. it seems she's in a fight to stay alive. it breaks my heart. death isn't so bad but dieing sucks. it become a full time struggle.

Chris, I just went through the same exact situation with my old female just a week ago. She stopped eating and couldn't stand...spent all day in her dog house. I decided to call the vet that night and have her put down. It's very hard to do but it's the right thing. They give them a shot so they go to sleep peacefully and then another shop that finishes them. We owe them that peaceful out...it's a tough thing to do but it's the right thing. You'll feel right about it afterwards just like I do now.

Thanks everyone, I went out before I went to sleep last night and he had made his way to his dog house. Give him a good pat on the head and coverd him up. Went out this mourning before work and he had started a new journey. Have never had a dog that long and have never had a hound with the abilities he possesd. All I know is the good Lord has one nice hound to chase coon in the big timber now. He will never be replaced in my eyes and I am proud to say he did always give it all he had every time you cut him loose. Good by old friend, I'll catch up some day. Ch Grnitech Baker's Perche Creek Blue Bo May 15 1997-Nov. 15 2010 Thank you old man you will be missed!

Very sorry to hear of your loss. This is the part I dread most about owning any animal...they are never here long enough. I have a few (and one in particular) that I sure hope will be here with me as long (or hopefully longer) than your buddy was with you. Prayers your way...

A Pet's Ten Commandments............

Remember that pets can't do a lot of things for themselves and that they depend on you to make their life a quality life!
A PET'S TEN COMMANDMENTS.........
1. My life is likely to last 10-15 years. Any separation from you is likely to be painful.
2. Give me time to understand what you want of me
3. Place your trust in me. It is crucial for my well-being.
4. Don't be angry with me for long and don't lock me up as punishment. You have your work, your friends, your entertainment, but I have only you.
5. Talk to me. Even if I don't understand your words, I do understand your voice when speaking to me.
6. Be aware that however you treat me, I will never forget it.
7. Before you hit me, before you strike me, remember that I could hurt you, and yet, I choose not to bite you.
8. Before you scold me for being lazy or uncooperative, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I'm not getting the right food, I have been in the sun too long, or my heart might be getting old or weak.
9. Please take care of me when I grow old. You too, will grow old.
10 On the ultimate difficult journey, go with me please. Never say you can't bear to watch. Don't make me face this alone. Everything is easier for me if you are there, because I love you so.

~Take a moment today to thank God for your pets. Enjoy and take good care of them. Life would be a much duller, less joyful experience without God's critters.

We do not have to wait for Heaven, to be surrounded by hope, love, and joyfulness. It is here on earth and has four legs!
