Fall is nearly over where I live and that white, winter snow will soon be upon us. I loaded hounds yesterday and then returned home just in time to get in nine holes of golf before dark set in. Well, the sun is shining and knowing snow is just a heartbeat away ol' Ike is gonna get those golf clubs out this afternoon. I hope each of you are soaking some of that sunlight in before the winter gloom sets in..........

Yes sir, It surely wont be long. Actually, we had our first snow of the season this weekend in the higher elevations. The mountains at the Tennessee/ North Carolina line had about 6-8 inches. I live in the valley about 40 miles to the west and we just had some unusuall cold temperatures for this time of year. Think the low was 28 last night.

Like you said though, Fall is nearly over....... and I have to go finish my new dog houses before winter gets here.

Good luck finishing those dog houses cause winter is coming. We had a cold storm come through during deer season and it felt like winter for a few days, snowed in the high country and some of the local boys must have gotten out on that snow and killed a couple lions cause one unit closed. They are either braver than me or not thinking very clear to turn hounds down a lion track with all those deer rifles out there, cause there is plenty of time to kill a lion without putting a pack into harm's way........

Where I live our deer season is from June till end of January. So I put mine in harms way for nearly half the year I guess. Although our hunters have such a long time to hunt I dont need to worry about people slinging bullets at everything that moves.

The rifle hunters had five days this year and sending hounds in on a deer hunter isn't very smart in that situation.........on a yearlong lion season and those deer hunters probably all know it, good way to get a dog shot. I can't imagine how selfish that would be to have 356 days to hunt lions and deer hunters having only five days, then having them think that I distroyed their little heaven. If we as houndsmen don't have a little respect for our fellow sportsmen they'll take complaints to the fish and game and shorten our season....count on it!

That is pretty crazy how short the deer season is. But I think they shouldnt let them overlap. I can see how you guys would have problems with a dog getting shot or injured during this time. Went hunting on public land once here in Washington during their 7 day season and thought I was going to get shot myself, pretty scary with how many people are in a small area

The deer herds in Utah have been struggling for a number of years, and the season length has been shortened as needed. New management plans are out before the public and I'm sure hunter numbers will be reduced to help the herds recover, and if they do then I suppose that's Ok. Personally I haven't had a deer tag in over twelve or thirteen years, so I take no responsibility in the deal. But there will be some tough choices ahead and I'm sure people will learn to live with them.

We should probably give up on the mule deer and import whitetail deer, as they bred their first year and have two or three fawns causing a more robust herd. But that won't ever happen.......

There was a number of year round units that were left open to lion harvest because of depredation on bighorn sheep herds or mule deer. Most of those units have gone back to a winter season and closed because the deer or bighorns are holding their own. There was always a quota, and if the harvest number was met the unit closed whether it was February or September. Some of those units only had twelve to fifteen animals available for harvest, and lions don't grow on trees like many of the deer hunters believe.

Ahh, ok . Well I was just kinda curious about how it all worked out. Sounds like your lion population is bout like our bear population. Everbody around here gets trigger happy and then wonder why they cant find anything to run.....or anything big enough to take..... But im probably the odd man out in my neck of the woods, I like to hear a good race and see some dogs work.

Running the hounds is what it's all about not how much a guy can kill. I'd rather be remembered for what I walked away from than what I have taken over my dogs.....

Thanks! I walked away from this tom the last week or two of the season, a really nice tom lion up close to 15 inches and wondered how many people has ever done that with a tag in their pocket. Like I said, I rather me remembered for what I left on the mountain rather than what I took home......

My walker/bluetick did go for the tackle, except the lion was shot twice and came out very alive with an adrenaline rush! Bit through his ear, into the tracking collar (which saved his life) and luckily he was able to get back. The tracking collar is pretty busted up but still seems to work. Where you put the magnet back in (Johnson collar) he took one whole side off and a bunch of plastic (or whatever material that is) with it. Plus he cracked the shell of it where the battery goes into.
