Dogs being shot I need help on what to do

I have a problem. In the past three months there has been three dogs shot by other people while they were hunting. One of them happened to be one of our best dogs. We were hunting on goverment land and our dog was on a trail and ran through a camp where she was shot. We contacted Jefferson City conservation department and nothing was done about it. Is there something I can do so this doesnt happen to someone else? Why are people punishing dogs for doing what they are supposed to? Why can they get away with it? Please help me out and to find away to say this isnt ok. My five year old say she doesnt like hunting anymore because of it. Thanks for listening.

If it was on government land there has to be something you can do.If they would have shot some other kind of animal for walking through there camp they would have got a ticket.I hope this never happens to me or my dogs,i dont want to be put in that position to have to make a decision to rely on the law or to take care of it myself. Is there an organization we can join that backs us up on stuff like this?If there isnt somebody should organize one.Our yearly dues would pay for a lawyer when this stuff happens.Good luck with the outcome, this is getting to close to home for me.

I need help on what to do

I am looking for a organization that would back us, it is getting way out of control here with this. One of my friends has a lawyer and has gone to court for this and has lost. They are getting ready to go back on a appeal. The hunters that shot our dog was from Arkansas and are long gone by now. Nobody wanted to help us one bit all they looked at it is oh well just another dog. Or at least thats what it seems like. I know in some states it is a felony to shoot someone elses dog. One lawyer told me all I can do is write the state senate and see if there is a law or a way of making a law for this reason, but he said it wont do any good unless there is more then one person writing in. I am waiting to find a organization that would help me back this or more people out there that are willing to write in before I send one. I dont want them just pushing under table for just one person writing. Thanks for the support. If you hear of anything can you post me something about it please?

hounds shot

I have been shot at twice this season but it was drug heads trying to run us out of their patchs.Hate to say it but if a man has the nerve to shoot now season is in well the law here at much they will take a dope heads side before they will a honest person.I HAVE WENT TO THE PEOPLE RIGHT AFTER THEY SHOT AND TOLD THEM THE OUT COME IS GOING TO BE.THE LAW WANT BE CALLED.But in your case looks like the law would put a stop to it.goverment land is everyones.make them pay to full.

The Sherriff should have been called out and should have ticketed the shooters , probably for a variety of charges. You CANNOT just shoot a dog in Mo for no reason , even if its on private property , let alone Goverenment property.

Unless there is more to your story , such as property damages or threatening livestock , you should have a slam dunk win case against the shooters.

Similar cases I've heard of resulted in the shooters fined and the dog owner awarded damages for the price of the dog.

If the Sherriff in your county does not do his job in this matter , he should be voted out of offfice.

The law was called in this case and they never showed up to doanything they said it was the conservationist spot to do something. They of course have packed up and left already so nothing will be done to them now. I want to try and get something going now to help other people who get put in this spot. Down here nothing happens to the shooters the judges even take there side even when there is proof in front of them. Cripplecreek is proof of that the people were lying in court that a spectater could point out plan as day and the judge still ruled with the shooter. My dog was a good dog and got shot doing what she was trained to do. I dont want this to happen to anyone or if it does there should be hell to pay not oh its ok u go on your way. Thanks for all the help I am getting it will come in handy.

There are 2 sides of each and every dog shooting case; the first is legal prosecution, the second is civil action.

1. Legal prosecution; if the deputies, LEO's, etc will not prosecute explain as nicely as possible that you plan to file a complaint to the county DA's officeor and/or you will be taking the law into your hands and if anything is done as a result you will name them in a lawsuit, ask for their badge number. Typically the threat of complaints and lawsuits plus the fear you will shoot it out with the dog shooters will cause the reluctant LEO's to at least fill out papers and get things rolling. However it is very likely you will still have to follow up with a county DA to see that the animal cruelty/destruction of property charges are pursued.
2. Civil; show me the money - regardless of what happens with the LEO's and DA you need to contact a lawyer and file a civil complaint for damages (cost of the dog) against the shooter. This will take time, sometimes more than a year or two but this is where you hurt the shooter and their family where it hurts in the pocketbook. IT"S THE DOG OWNERS JOB TO HIRE A LAWYER AND FILE A CIVIL CASE, you can choose small claims and represent yourself, but be prepared with notarized ffadavits saying your dog was friendly, maybe one from a vet saying the coonhound breed is generally friendly, and proof or a written statement from the Wildlife Dept that free casting dogs for hunting is legal. This will counter the shooter's lies that your dog was aggresive or that the dog was not abiding by county leash laws....

Are you a member of your state Coon Hunters Assn; if not you should be and so should every one who owns a hound. Any way, this group should have some helpful information that will assist you in getting you your day in court. The important thing is you have the backing of hundreds of voters in the state; this goes a long way in persuading the "political machine" to act in your behalf. Tom
