need some serious advice

I have a walker female that I bought last nov out of a big n
ame stud dog. The breeder said she had been fooled with quite a bit. He is a reputable guy with a lot of nice hounds. When I got her home she was follow a drug track silently to tree then tree till the cows came home. She was 4 months old then.
I then started letting her see some cage coons with my older dog last jan. She would raise a fuss but I could not tell if it was at the coon or her playing with the older dog.
When she sees a cage coon solo, she won't even bark at it. She is scared to death. Does this mean she is not going to make it. When I run her with my older male and he trees she just keeps milling around doing nothing. Hate to giv up on her, can't stand to see her killed, but don't know what to do. Please help!

I would GUESS you burnt her out messing with to many cage coon around the house. I am guessing she is around 11 months now. I would put her up for a month were she can't play or even see another dog or human for 2-3 weaks. Then take her hunting or release a coon to her and the older dog. Don't let her get to the cage just let her watch the older dog bawl at it from 10' away. Make sure she sees the coon leave then turn her loose. Hold the old dog till you see she isn't going to run it on her own. Then let the old dog do the work and shoot it out DEAD to both of them so she can get a mouth full and not get bit. Might help her past her fear and build a little drive in her.

I wouldn't give her a live coon or even let her around one till she is 2 years old.

DON'T WORRY

I showed my best dog a caged coon once, just to see when she'd do. She tucked tail and dove in her house lol! Stop messin with caged coon and just hunt the dog. Tie it back a ways from the tree and put the coon out for the other dog. Here's some pics of my dog that is scared of a cage coon. Dont give up.

advice

Thanks so much to all the help. This gyp is as sweet as they come. I'm new to the sport except for when I used to go with my friends. My 26month male was the first coonhound I started. He hated a coon from day one. It sort of made it self explanitory for him. She has been the opposite. I have only let her see maybe 3 or 4 cage coons total. She is about 18 months. So I am definitly not giving her up just yet after all the advice.

We had one that we thought was scared of caged coon...wasn't the coon it was the cage! Left the empty cage in her pen with her for a week so she got used to it and knew that it was nothing to be scared about...next time she saw a caged coon at a treeing contest she was all over it!

If she doesn't have drive, there is no method or amount of work that will put it in her. As a trainer, all you can do is maximize her genetic potential. Not all pups come out the way that breeders would have you believe with their hype. If you got a porkchop, you got a porkchop. If you ruined her, that can be fixed. If she was destined for culling, nothing can be done about that. If you believe in her, keep plugging away. My suggestion to you is.....leave her alone for a month or more. Re-introduce hunting to her differently than you did before with as much of a different setting as possible. 18 months is generally a very important time in maturation stage of a slow developing dog. What you do, or don't do now, will mean the difference between a hunting buddy or a house dog, prance around the ring I'm so pretty shyt-eater.

thanks

Thanks a lot. I have seen the drive in her when she was young. I want to believe the milling around while the older dog trees his coon is sort of a sign of independence. Just did not understand her being affraid. Hopefully its a maturity thing. As far as how I introduced her was simple, drug some tracks and turned her loose. I tried to be extremely careful not to over expose her. Hunted her 1 or 2 nights a week with older dog. Drug a track or two once and a while.
But then it was like she was just un interested. Night before I hunted her with the older dog. He hunted and she did her own thing. Last night I hunted him only. She fussed the whole time I was in hearing distance cause she didn't get to go.
Love the part about hunting buddy, house dog, shyt eater!

We had a dog like that once. She was about two and half when we turned a live coon inthe pen with her. Then all the scaredness went away and the meaness came out in her when it was in her territory it had a tree to climb to get out of the pen but he didnt make it that far. She was a very aggresive hunter after that.

I'LL SHOOT YOU STRAIGHT AS I CAN I'M NOT A KNOW IT ALL OR NOTHING JUST LEAVE THE DOG ALONE YOU CAN'T MAKE A COONDAWG ITS IN THEIR BLOOD. WE LET THEM GROW UP SOME TEACHING THEM TO LEAD AND LOAD TAKING THEM TO THE WOODS WITH OTHER DOGS NOT CONSTANTLY TURNING COONS OUT FOR THEM JUST LET THEM LEARN ON THEIR OWN BY RUNNING IN THE WILD. I PROMISE YOU IF YOU'LL JUST TAKE IT TO THE WOODS AND DON'T WORRY ABOUT WHAT ITS DOING JUST LET HER RUN LOOSE AND LOAD HER UP AT THE END OF THE NITE DON'T EVEN HANDLE HER AT A ANOTHER DOGS TREE PICK HER UP AT THE TRUCK EVENTUALLY YOU'LL GET HER OFF OF HER TREE WHEN SHE STARTS DOING HER OWN THING BY HERSELF SHE'S READY FOR THE WOODS BY HERSELF START WALKING HER AROUND WHERE COONS ARE AND SHE'LL DO IT FOR HERSELF IN THE WILD WITHOUT CAGED COONS. ALOT OF DOGS ARE RUINED BY CAGED COONS AND OWNERS TRYING TO PRESSURE THEM INTO BARKING AT IT AND TREEING ONE. I'VE SEEN DOGS TREE THE CAGE,START SIGHT CHASING WHEN THEY SEE SOMETHING RUN THEY TAKE OFF AFTER IT, DON'T TREE UNLESS ITS REALLY HOT TRACK. JUST OFFERING SOME ADVICE. YOU EVER TRIED TO MAKE A YARD DOG OUT OF A HOUND IT DOESN'T WORK OUT WELL IT'LL START RUNNING AND TREEING ALL BY ITSELF WITHOUT ANY HELP FROM YOU. JUST BACK OFF AND TAKE IT TO THE WOODS AS MUCH AS POSSIABLE DON'T EVEN PET IT OR NOTHING UNLESS YOUR AT THE TRUCK OR TREED.
