My female should be having pups in about 3wks if all goes well. I am going to build a house for her to have them in. It will be 48in. long 40in wide and 30in tall with a hindged roof. I also want to try and design the floor so that i can put about 3in of dirt in the bottom. Has anyone ever did a floor that way and if so how did you do it and how did the dog like it, was it good for the pups? Also any other suggestion on building it would be welcomed. Thanks

Just wondering what advantage a dirt floor would have? I cannot think of any.

I built a big nice whelping box years ago,,it.s now full of junk. I put her in the building and she has the pups were she wants,I have even moved them to the box after there born and she will pack them rite back to were she wants them,,so I give up on a box.

I have always heard that dog would rather waller a depression in the ground to have pups. As a kid growing up, our dogs always got under a old car or something and made a depression. I also wondered if it would help disolve the waste from the pups? just wondering.

I wouldn't build a dog house. Before too long those pups will get big. Then the house is too small. Being a Vet Tech i cringe at the idea of a dirt floor. Not only would parasites be a problem, but sanitation too. Mom can only clean up so much for so long.
Do you have a garage or some where with a cement floor? Then you could put up an ex-pen with a whelping box in it. Easy to clean and change with the needs of the litter.

90% of the time my whelping box is just another off the ground dog run about 5X 12 feet with a dog house (30X48X30) built on the back. The modification is a big wide door cut on the outside back to check the pups. I also have a 2X4 screwed in sideways about three inches off the floor so pups won't get laid on and pressed against the wall. The bottom of the opening to the run has a 2X6 across it it to keep the pups in the box till they are big enough to climb out and in. The front end of the run has the main door where mamma gets fed. If cold, I put a light bulb tight under one end of the bottom of the box and let them decide which part of the box to lay on. When weaning, mamma goes and pups stay in the off the ground pen and stays like that till pups crowd each other if not sold. My pick stays off the ground pen till at least six months old with plenty of on the ground woods walking. More time than not that run is used to house females that I don't want bred because it is more secure than my kennels LOL. The floor of the box for pups is like the spray on Rinoliner for truckbeds or the stuff that keeps you from slipping on boat floors.
