I started treating my 14 week old pup 3 weeks ago at the first sight of a flea. He was not infested and I could only find a very few on him. I started bathing him in a flea shampoo because he was not quite 12 weeks old yet. The fleas were gone and I have not seen one since. I have treated him with a bio spot type of pour on since along with flea powder regularly as well as his bedding area. It looks like he has gotten bitten all over in spite of all of my efforts. I can't find a flea on him or any of the other dogs in the kennels. Has anyone else dealt with this? He does not appear to be uncomfortable and is not scratching but the hair is coming off around the bite areas. My next option is the vets office unless sombody has some better ideas pretty quickly. Could I still be dealing with fleas even though I cannot find any of them?

he might have had an allergy to fleas. sometimes they will lose their hair. if you have avon skin so soft, it will sooth his skin plus kill fleas, repel ticks and skeeters. if his skin gets too bad , use benadryl capsules. let him eat in a piece of cheese or somethin. will get rid of his allergic reaction. get the stuff with just diphenhydramine hydrochloride in it. nothin else. gave it to my coonhound who got bit by a spider, head swelled the size of a bowlin ball and almost lost him. took him to vet after i gave benadryl and he said i saved his life. vet gave him a shot of benadryl in the rear and he was good as good in a day.

Yes it does look like scabs. I bathed him in sulfedine this afternoon. I will try to find the Zodic. Do you remember where you got it?
The benadryl sounds like it could help to. He is 14 weeks old and seems to be very healthy other than those frustrating bites.

sounds to me like just may be sensitive skin from all the stuff done been done.... happy jack kennel dip is also good for fleas and skin conditions

I did some checking on the Benadryl and it is certainly a common practice to use for dogs.Thanks branchvillekell for giving me that info. I am sure it will come in handy in the future as well. I will see how he gets along on the Benadryl for a couple of days and go from there. I have been putting a triple ointment on the bites on his head and they seem to be geting better and the hair around the bites is coming back. I am using it on the rest of his problem areas as well.I will try to give a report in a few days and hopefully this info can be used by someone else in the future.

Demodectic Mange. All pups are normally born with this mite and get it from the female. Might be what you,re dealing with. I have seen it in some pups at this age and have found if I put Ivermec on these spot that look like little sores where the hair comes out seems to cure them right up. I just draw some Ivermec up in a siringe and then take the needle off and put a small amount around the spot for a few days and it will clear right up. In doing so, the pup also absorbs the Ivermec thru it's skin and cures and kills other mites that have not turned into adults yet. Give it a try!

I think Danny may be a little more on the right track about it being a skin/parasite time thing.

While you are doing your research on that, also check out "staph".

Staph is something we ALL have on our skin and most are never bothered with it..But sometimes we or in the case of your pup, we are super sensitive to it.

For example: Someone that says they are allergic to mosquito bites. Bites that when scratched turn into nasty infected looking soars. Well, this is not so much the mosquito bites as it is being "super sensitive" to the "staph" that is in their skin.

Lets go back to referring to your pup...OK, he had a mild case of fleas. The flea bites irritated and itched so he scratched. When the pup scratched then the staph set it in. Staff comes in various looking forms. Some not so bad looking and some down right nasty.

Whelps/bumps that may or may not blister, but, they will loose the hair in the blister spot as it starts drying. The the spot gets dry and crusty.


I would say what Danny said or staph is your problem. I have not delt with the mange thing, but this staph needs a strong round of antibiotics to knock it our or it will come back.


My words or understanding of this may not exactly correct, so look it up and see what you get out of your reading..It's pretty interesting anyway.

My neice has been working with a vet this summer. She says many dogs have had allergic reactions to Bio-Spot. Says it has caused many reactions including DEATH.

Not to disagree...but I used biospot for many many years. Never had any kind of reaction to it but it lost it's effectiveness after a while. The only reason I stopped using it. I heard that story from my vet too so I'm sure it must do that in some cases. Probably COULD happen with most other flea treatments as well.

sounds to me he might have deer ticks, they are like a speck of dust that Moves LOL 1 deer tick will bite numerous time before he sticks, i had the same problem, until i treated mine so much i thought i was going to kill him but they are gone i used Bayer tree and Shrub, 7 dust and Front Line I dont know which one done it but there gone GOOD LUCK
