my opinion is.... If the dog is 13months or older and has never been out of the pen i or been introduced to any kind of hunting you would be better off buying a 6 week old puppy and starting from scratch... Not sure how old the dog is you are talking about but if it has never been out of the pen it is gonna be stupid and you have alot of stuff to teach him that should have been taught at a young age. I still dont think he will amount to his full potential. So im gonna say get a young pup let it run loose for several months and start working with it. Your time will be better spent than trying to start an older pup. This is my opinion from my experiences others may disagree.

i personally wont buy another pup over 6 months old that has not been worked with.

We took a three year old brood gyp that had never been to the woods and in a year placed in the top 20 of the ukc world hunt. We also finished her to grand and finished 2nd in the PKC state hunt. I won a lot of cast and treed a lot of coons with that dog and she produced the best dog I have ever walked behind.

at what age did you buy her? I would guess she was started as a pup and messed with at a young age and then put up..??? I have two brood gyps that were started and hunted at a young age and are now put up. I could take either one tonight and tree a coon one is 6 and one is 4.... Either way congrats on your gyp!

I believe if they've got it theyre born with it and they always have it. If not, they'll never have it.

We bought her when she was three and started hunting her. She hadn't been hunted until then. She was dirt cheap so we gave it a whirl and got lucky.
