Pup shots

It won't hurt them at 5 weeks Theo. I always give them a 7 way instead of a 5 way pup shot. Always had good luck giving the 7 ways.

All I know is what my vet told me. He said that giving them shots before they are weened is a waist. It want hurt them but it isn't doing any good either. He said the antibodies in the mothers milk will kill everything in the shot.

This is right on! Giving pups shots earlier than 6 weeks of age will more than likely be waisted $. All companies that sell shots for canines have info on the back of them and you will find that 6 weeks is the starting point and given 2 to 3 weeks apart with the last shot given at the age of 16 weeks or older. Giving the series of shots is what eventually takes and over powers the antibodies from the bitch and eventually immunes the pup itself! Simple task at 6-9 weeks 5 ways and 9 ways at 12 and last at 16 weeks or older!

x2 I am a veterinary assistant. It is called maternal antibody interference and is the reason its so important to booster shots every 3-4 weeks until 16 weeks old. We know that at 16 weeks maternal antibodies have reached their peak and there is no more interference in most cases. Be sure to take a cooler with ice pack if you are picking up your vaccines from a store because if you do not keep them at the correct temperature they will also be worthless and NEVER freeze them. Some people make that mistake.

Its not good to give shots before 6 weeks old. You should try to time it so that you wean and starts shots in a sequence that starts a pups emunity when the mothers begins to wear off.

5 way booster
3 weeks later ~ 2nd 5 way booster
3 weeks later~ 3rd booster which is a 7 way. Also Bordatella booster by mouth
3 weeks later ~ 4th booster which is a 7 way booster. Rabies should be given then as well as the final bordatella booster , by mouth.

Jeffers is the best Ive found at getting vaccines to your door cold. Never leave them out of the fridge.

Cleo,
We Usually Order from Jeffers, in Quantities of 25. . But, we only had 2 pups this time. We have always given Pup Shot @ 4 weeks and never had a problem. But, waiting until 6 weeks as long as they are nursing makes sence.
Thanks Everyone, Gale Lilly

A pup receives some immunity from it's mother during early nursing. The immunity that the pups received from it's mother limit's a vaccine's effectiveness. The idea is to get the vaccine in the pup as soon as the mother's passive immunity wears off so that the pup can make more lasting immunity of it's own. The precise time when a pup can respond well to a vaccine is variable -- it might occur at 6 weeks or perhaps 12 weeks. Giving shots at intervals is just trying to find the closest time frame after a mother's immunity wears off so that the pup has less of a gap in time without some immunity.

I give my pups shots 1/2 to 2 weeks AFTER WEANING.For the reasons written about maternal antibodies. So depending on pups weaning date it cold be anywhere 5.5 to 6.5 weeks old for first shot.
Secondly very important..It is NO LONGER RECOMMENDED pups get 7 ways. It has been found that the Leptos was causing reactions and death in some cases.I actually witnessed a pup having a reaction to its first shot years ago.

I give a series of three 5 ways then a 7 way at six months of age. Then another 7 way at 1year.
I believe they are gradually going to 9 ways ,don't know.I do know TSC no longer carries the 7 way.
