Coonhound Pup, Shot out of Tree!!!

This happened Thursday nite, It was a Strange nite, I loaded up Chester and Woodrow, with the intent of Getting a Good hunt in before the Deer Hunters would take the Woods over that Saturday Morning.

I drove to the Otis Lowe Creek Bottom, to turn Loose, while driving down the Dirt Road to My Favorite Spot, I Saw a Freind of Mine, Joe, Standing by his truck, with a Couple of Young Hound Pups, and a Hunter Ive never Met, The Strange hunter was a Polite Man, We Spoke, I still dont remember his name, but I noticed he was holding a Single Barrel Shot Gun, I found this To be Strange. I heard Joes Old Walker Gyp, Cold Trailing, the Pups he had hadnt gone to her yet. He asked me to turn loose Chester and Woodrow, so I did, they didnt go to her, and instead Struck a Hot Track, just over the Hill and Treed a Coon, in a Few Minutes.
I shot the Coon out, Got stuck, turning my truck around, they pulled me out, we went back to listen for the Old Gyp, a Few Minutes later she Was Treed, one of the pups disapeared, well I left them to their Hound, and went on to My Favorite Spot.

Just as I turned my Hounds loose, I heard the Shot Gun, Go off,
and Thought to myself, "She Had one" well I hunted the rest of the nite, didnt see or hear from Joe, and his friend anymore, until the next day in the Store.
I saw Joe, and said, " I heard the Cannon, Go off, Got one Huh?"

He said, "Rick, that was the worst nite of my life, when we got to the tree, My Gyp, was on a Leaner, My friend saw Eyes in the tree, and Blasted, out fell one of My New Pups, that Ive been training." Man thats terrible Ive heard of this happening, but this is one of the Saddest Cases, of Careless ness Ive ever heard of. They thought the Pup, had gone back to the truck.
Just wanted to share that story with you. Please be Carefull, and make sure you Know where all the Hounds are, before You Shoot.

OH, I Forgot,

Fortunately the Pup, survived, It was hit in the neck, by Shotgun Pellets, but has survived, I dont know what kind of long term Damage, will be done, and if not Physically But I would bet the Pup, will be Gun Shy, or Probably be afraid to tree.

yep, now think about this. Take about 100,000 people with that same frame of mind (shoot first, figure things out and ask questions later) or worse, and put them in treestands all over the world with high powered rifles and a DESPERATE DESIRE to kill a deer.........................

Definition of most deer hunters-----get gun out of closet once a year---go to woods once a year ---shoot anything they hear or think they see. . I stay away from woods durring week of gun season!!! PS ---Will shoot beagles and coon dogs for sport.

Richard,

Are you all required to take hunters education classes down there in Texas? There are some pretty basic rules in hunting and shooting, and being able to I.D. your target is right up there on the top of the list.

Scott

Sounds like a do or cull night and a bad shot to me. Couldn't imagine going coonhunting with a shotgun.

My uncle has to drive about a mile through paper company land to get to his place. The paper company leases it to a hunting club. Last deer season a florida cop killed one of my uncle's dogs just to see how bad his new gun was. The cop first said he shot a deer and the bullet went through and hit the dog. After the local police found his feet prints and the hull 20 feet where the dog was found, he said the dog was trying to attack him. People like this are giving deer hunters a bad rep.

Stupid idiotic moron.

In all my time with hounds I have never ever seen a red eye shine from a dog. I also have learned that the fast snap shot is never required on coon. There is always time to eyeball the situation and positively identify the target as a coon before I even load the gun. Yes the gun is unloaded until the very moment I decide to take the shot, that is if I decide to take the coon. After the shot the gun is unloaded to absolutely ensure safety with the hounds tugging and pulling on the lead.

warrier, i have to agree with you on the gun safety. and taking your time to know the target. but i have two mix breed dogs whose eyes shine red at night in the light and my blue eyed coonhound does also. but yes this was entirely stupid on those guys part and i have never seen anyone use a shotgun on coon either.

It was strange to me,

Ive never seen a Man, Coonhunt with a Shot Gun before, Im just thankfull, that my Hounds didnt put in with his.

That could have been one of my hounds shot out of that tree.
The Hunter Handler, of the Hounds, is an experienced Coonhunter, I guess he didnt realize what kind of guest he had along with him.
The Shooter, likes BBQ Racoon, and I guess, was kind of like a Deer hunter in a Way.

I'll admit to using a shotgun.

Specifically a .410, though I have potshotted the occasional coon with a 12 during turkey season. (On properties managed for turkey the coons are to be eliminated)

Certain areas of Government Ground around here require you to use Shotguns to shoot coons out during season.

ANd this is not a definition of most deer hunters this is just an instance where an idiot don't need to be hunting.

Tom

Man how time flies, I looked and I made this post in November of 2005.
That was a heck of a night.
I sure am glad that my hounds didnt put in with theirs.
Tying the hounds prior to shooting out a Coon is a good Idea.
