what makes a dog/pup GO?

What makes a dog go to get treed without walking them?
Iv had a dog that you drop the tailgate and he was off to hunt until he got treed or I called him back, or rest of the time he just came back after huntin a good awhile! But I didn't train him! Now I just got pups/young dogs and was wondering if they can be trained to just GO and hunt till treed or if they are just born with that drive? Or both? Please explain. Also if they just develope and start going-------then at what age (range) do they start pushing out deeper on there own without walking them? (Givin that the dog is getting a fair chance and hunted at least 3 nights a week)

They are born with it , heart and drive are not trainable qualities they have to be born with it!!!!! That's what a lot of these walkers are lacking! IMO,I have seen it in my old blood and seen it in the wipeout blood but the drive your speaking of is getting rarer every day! Iwill have some nice litters in the spring hopefully and I guarantee they will get gone buy 6 months !

I have no intrest in the ones that run just to run.

You need to let pups just be dogs for a while. Most will naturally just wander off sniffing and poking as they go, then they come back.....and thats ok for a while.

Once they start treeing coon most will range as far as needed if you hunt them that way.

Rarely will you see someone from indiana or iowa or ohio asking questions about how to get a dog to range out and go find a coon. Its almost always us southern guys with these questions. From now on i will only buy dogs or pups that were born and bred in my general area. Preferably for generations. I dont care what a dog can do up north where coons run around like squirells all over the place, doesn't concern me in the least. I need something that works in these north Georgia hills and gets the job done. People see a litter pups born up there and a picture in the magazine of 100 coons strung up that the parents treed in the last month and next thing you know they got a puppy from the cross down here and it aint got the drive to get it done. I aint saying dogs up there aint coon dogs , that aint what i mean but what i mean is you dont take a cadillac to a mud bogg.

I got a pup here when he was 5 months old he started hisself site chasing rabbits and after that he would go looking for them when I let him out of his pen.Tonight when I turned him out he got introduced to a deer near the yard,He ran it 400 yrds till he came to a dirt road.He hushed or lost his track and at that time I was shouting his name to come and telling him no,in a few minutes he was at my feet( and he was wanting to try it again) Its called ...GENETICS IT IS INHERITTED...Sure ,you can train some but it sure makes it alot easier if they are born with it...ABOUT 95% ARE NOT...WE CAN THANK THE SO CALLED BREEDERS FOR THAT....jmo

They are more or less born with the desire to hunt but with puppies you have to work with them to get them use to the woods and not be afraid you are going off and leave them.

After they get a little age on them and gain confidence they will venture out farther and farther and get to where they will go til they get treed or check in after they have hunted out an area according to their breeding.

Hunting puppies with old dogs when they are too young cases problems I don't like. I like to train puppies myself (Just me and the puppy) rather than turning it over to an old dog to do it for me.

Being kind to a dog has nothing to do with them staying under your feet. You can't MAKE A DOG HUNT by beating on him! He has to WANT TO HUNT! Once he does that you have accomplished your mission.

I have never had one that didn't hunt as far as he needed to after I got him started.

Jason,
Sometimes its better to just let people think you're stupid than to open your mouth and prove that you are.

Sheep has never hunted here, but he knows all about it, just ask him.

dont know much but i know mine will go as fare as it takes to get one if i lut him. first two years he did not though. all summer i i hunted him alone and in place that had been hit hard last hide season. but i will say the dog has to want a coon for any thing to work.

You can't make a dog do anything ... hunt and coon sense is just a talent like personality in people.

Some dogs will grow into it with some switching and experience ... but if they just don't wanna go ... you are whipping them for nothing.

I do think ti helps to cast dogs from big fields or open creeks towards timber ... they do seem to improve when they have to cover some ground to get to the woods or can run a creek ... if you get lucky and the coon are moving to reward them for hunting out .... you can do alot of good for a pup's confidence.

I have hunted up North .... Nebraska , Illinois , Iowa and their coon are easier to find and tree . It's easy walking and the whole thing is a break from what I'm used to ....

I agree .... if you want something to hunt in your area , look in your area first and see what's working ... that applies to everything from planting flowers to coonhunting .... I don't see how anyone could argue that based on logic ...

3 mos he would bark at a cage Coon till he slobbered at the mouth. He would tree drags at 4-5 mos. An would disappear Win took hunting with my other dogs an wouldn't go. Once my hounds treed he would race to the tree an if there was a Coon there he would knock the top out. If no Coon he wouldn't pay tree no attention. I would shoot coons out an he would fight to kill them with a passion. I mean he hated a coon.. I kept him till he was 3 an he wouldn't go n trail no Coon. Never bumped any junk, but I could trap a Coon n release him an he would tree him. But wouldn't open, but was a treeing dude... I don't believe n whooping 1 to make him go hunt.. I feel if he ain't gonna hunt he ain't gonna hunt, an if u gotta whoop him to hunt, just how many nights are u gonna have to Woop him till he get tired or u get tired...

Some parts up north are easier terrain and to tree coons. I have plenty of rough hunting if you need a wakeup call every now and then. Do you guys get feet of snow and real frosty cold nights in October? I highly doubt it. I've been as far south as Texas and hunted the whole Midwest. I'd take Texas over all of this. Less coons but pasture walking and flattest hunting I've ever had. I realize all southern hunting isn't like this, but all northern hunting isn't like you guys describe either.
