Breeding Babblers?

Are we breeding competition dogs that false bark when you turn them loose to steal strike points from the honest strike dog?Of course we are just being honest about it .

I cant stand hunting against a babbler as much as I hate to own a still mouth hound. You think you've got an honest strike dog then you draw a babbler or 2 in a cast and your sucking hind tit. If you could produce a babbling me too dog you could win a lot of hunts if you don't mind winning like that.

I was pleasure hunting the other night and soon as my friend turned his walker off the lead he barked non stop. He did this for 5 drops till I got tired of listening to it and called it a night

I'm curious is babbling a genetic trait? Or is it a learned behavior? I don't know if it's bred into dogs as much as it's the NEW AGE HANDLER'S allowing them to babble to attain the 100 points rewarded for striking 1st. If you know much about hunting it's easy to acknowledge when a dog is babbling, and to most hunters babbling drop after drop is rather annoying. Whether it's a genetic trait or a learned behavior most any handler should be able to break even the most rattle headed dog from babbling by simply using an E-COLLAR, that is if they truly want them to stop!!! HAHA

I believe 90% of babbling is caused by starting pups too young with a broke dog that is too fast for them to keep up with.I've seen this happen in rabbit dogs, fox dogs ,deer dogs and coon dogs.

What is actually happening is the pups learn to run the other dogs. Usually the guys that have these kind of dogs will always have this kind of dog.

I wouldn't beat on it. I personally know a big time stud dog guy that actually had an IRS agent bring a female to his stud dog. Then he got nailed big time!

Not enough judges are willing to minus a dog in a lot of our hunts for this ugly fault. Too many handlers are getting away with it, especially in the smaller PKC hunts. First on the card scores as well as first tree. Finally hunted with a judge that was willing to do it....THANKS, Joe!! Good job!!!!

Babbling used to be an excited dog that left barking..

Now, we have dogs that bark constantly, some are dog tracking, junk running, or just barking at nothing.

As far as I understand the rules, a dog struck dog tracking or junk running can not be minused.....possibly scratched, but not likely.

An honest strike dog today is a 3rd or 4th strike dog in most casts.....That's a fact I don't see changing anytime soon.

Mike I personally think the majority just breed because they have a female. I personally won't purchase a pup unless it SS and paid up by person selling. If one is willing to put spend that kind of money I feel a lot
Of thought and planning has gone into the therefore increasing the odds if I do my part. There is a lot more to it than this of course

The problem is most people don't know how to train a dog I know tons of people that hunt but only two or three of them can train a pup

Why of course not Mike, that would be just as bad as folks breeding silent dogs, which I'm sure doesn't happen either!

Just curious, what is your definition of an "honest strike dog" ?

A dog that opens as soon as it smells coon scent.

babbling, barking whatever = FREE POINTS!

Absolutely, same way comp hunters bred these intense tree dogs that are so quick to tree they often times beat the coon there. Every time I hear a comp hunter complain about babblers or slick treeing idiots I have to chuckle bc comp hunters are what created these dogs.

I'm not sure I agree with this bc I've never hunted w a pleasure hunter that runs a babbling dog but I've hunted with tons that run pups w older dogs. It's rare to find a pleasure hunter that hunts babbling, slick treeing idiots bc they're not a pleasure to hunt and there is no benefit to hunting this type of dog where as comp hunts can steal some hunts with a dog like this. Now obviously there are some tremendous coondogs owned by comp hunters but I believe most of these Junkers are too.

Can I have the cast step over here for a few words before we begin our hunt.......Listen and I mean listen close fellers........

Any dog struck before mine will be minused for babbling!!!!!!!!! My dog will be the "official check dog" of this cast. I'm sick and tired of other dogs babbling and making mine follow them taking second tree all nite on all these circle and slick trees.

I'm gonna call UKC later today and line up Todd to go hunting with my little Gyp.....I think the rules should be amended to better fit her hunting style.

I love this response Justin! This needs to be copy/pasted on every one of these threads. It is closer to the truth than most of the excuses posted regarding the subject.

Al, am curious what the pedigree looks like in all these pleasure dogs?

pleasure hunters

usally don't feel as though they need to take a pup off the teat and take it to woods right away before its to old to make the next youngest stud dog in the coonhound world. that explains why the pleasure hunters don't have as much trouble with babblers.

another reason is they wont keep putting up with a babbler for very long. it will simply be allimanated.

A competition dog and a coondog are 2 different things babbling would never be accepted if it couldn't help them win
